Job Description
The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure-earning temporary Assistant Professor appointment in Music Technology.
The UAB Department of Music seeks a dynamic teacher and experienced professional with demonstrated expertise in multiple areas of music technology, including recording engineering and contemporary studio production practices. A master's degree in Music Technology, Recording Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required; a doctorate is preferred.
Primary responsibilities include:
• Teaching undergraduate courses in Computer Music, Recording Technology and studio-based music technology
• Supporting the operation and pedagogical use of departmental music tech labs
• Mentoring students pursuing careers in music technology, audio engineering, production, and related industries
• Supervising students in their capstone internship placements
• Recruiting for the Music Technology area
• Participating in departmental service and activities
Additional teaching responsibilities may include Introduction to Music Technology, Synthesis, or Multimedia, consistent with departmental needs and the candidate's areas of expertise.
Priority will be given to candidates with:
• Demonstrated collegiate-level teaching experience in Music Technology, with advanced proficiency in industry-standard software, including AVID Pro Tools and Sibelius, Reason, Ableton Live, and Apple Logic Pro, along with fluency in leading music production and sound design plugins such as Spectrasonics, Waves, and Native Instruments.
• Significant professional experience in studio recording environments, including expertise with large- and small-format mixing consoles, industry-standard outboard gear, professional microphone techniques, and comprehensive knowledge of signal flow.
• A strong understanding of contemporary multimedia production workflows, including non-linear editing platforms such as Avid Media Composer, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, and Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as experience preparing and distributing audio and video content across major digital and social media platforms.
Candidates with a master's degree and a majority of the desired qualifications are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty in maintaining and strengthening a curriculum aligned with current professional practices in recording engineering and music technology.
Required Qualifications
A master's degree in Music Technology, Recording Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral degree in Music Technology, Recording Engineering, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
