SummaryThe Security & Safety Manager supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by managing the Museum’s security and safety functions. This includes creating, implementing, and overseeing security and safety policies, regulations, and procedures to provide a safe environment for staff and visitors. This position manages a 24-hour, 7-days a week unarmed security team that is responsible for keeping property, people, and assets safe within the campus including artifacts, collections, grounds, staff, and visitors. This position leads and supports all security and safety requirements for daily operations including private events, functions, and public programming. In collaboration with other Museum leaders, the Security and Safety Manager works with Human Resources to create and maintain training and associated communications for staff and volunteers. This position is the primary interface with fire, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, and neighboring security personnel.Â

- Manage Museum security and safety functions including develop, implement, and maintain company-wide safety and security policies, procedures and preventative practices related to building security and access, protection of company assets, safety hazard mitigation, emergency preparedness, and loss prevention.Â
- Develop, maintain, and update records required by law and Museum policy related to security, safety department standard operating procedures, Emergency Preparedness Plan, and other documents necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the facilities.Â
- Oversee the Museum’s security and life safety systems including alerts, fire panels, cameras, and access points to ensure proper operation and effectiveness.Â
- Manage a 24/7, unarmed security team including set objectives, provide feedback, coaching, evaluations, training, and corrective actions. Provide oversight to the Security Supervisor on hiring, scheduling, and managing performance of Security Officers.Â
- Provide safety and security consultation to Museum leaders in the creation of Museum activities, programs, and exhibit plans to ensure the safety and security of staff, visitors, the collection, and spaces.Â
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with law enforcement, fire, emergency, medical personnel, and related organizations to establish, implement, and maintain standard emergency response protocols.
- Work with the Human Resources regarding the Museum’s Occupational Safety and Accident Prevention Program, staff related investigations, and training records required by local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations.Â
- Monitor, identify, and facilitate the correction of safety issues throughout the Museum, assisting other department leaders with safety procedures and training specific to their work environments; serve on the Museum Safety Committee.
- Develop and maintain the department annual budget, including labor, training, and other department costs, proactively investigate and implement cost saving initiatives.Â
- Manage department related vendor agreements, contracts, and relationships. Process invoices and purchase orders to ensure goods and services per the terms of agreements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Security, Public Safety, or a related field. Equivalent experience in managing safety and security functions for a public attraction, museum, or not-for-profit venue or environment may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in security management including a minimum of 3 years supervisory and vendor oversight responsibilities.
- Experience managing access control systems, automated alerts, and fire safety panels and devices is highly preferred.
- Planning, budgeting, and forecasting experience is highly preferred.
Knowledge
- Displays a strong & proficient understanding of access control systems, automated systems for safety and security such as digital cameras, access control, and fire safety including the testing of those devices.
- Proven understanding and compliance of OSHA, WISHA, DOSH, and ADA requirements.
- Knowledge of preparation and execution of annual budgets.Â
Skills
- Effective planning and organizational skills; able to prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans; initiative to improve processes.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communications skills with strong attention to detail.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office/365.Â

- Comfortable making independent, timely, and sound decisions in a high-pressure environment including proven ability to manage critical incidents under pressure.

License & Certification
- Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification or may be obtained within 90 days of hire.Â
- Current Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.Â
- Professional Safety and Security Certifications are strongly desired.

- This position works around machinery and aircraft and, next to an active airport.
- Must be able to occasionally climb ladders and stairs, access tight and confined spaces, work on elevated catwalks, ladders, and lifts.
The Museum of Flight offers full-time employees a generous and comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, a 403(b) retirement plan with a 5% match after 1 year of service, Employee Assistance Program, as well as company paid life insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, and long-term disability.
Paid-Time OffOur paid time-off plans include 2 weeks of accrued sick leave and 2 weeks of vacation (80 hours each) per year, 10 paid holidays, and 2 floating holidays.
CompensationThe salary range for this position is $100,000 to $112,916.70Â depending on experience.Â
If you receive an offer, your starting salary will fall within the posted range. Compensation is determined by a variety of factors, including the scope of the position, years of relevant experience, specialized skills, internal equity, market conditions, and the candidate's qualifications and ability to successfully perform the role.
