Position: Collections Specialist
Status: Salary, Non Exempt
Reports To: Director of Collections and Exhibitions
Job Summary
The Collections Specialist supports the care, documentation, handling, and installation of artworks for the museum’s permanent collection and exhibitions. This role helps ensure artworks are preserved, safely handled, and accessible in accordance with museum standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the care, handling, movement, and installation of artworks
- Monitor gallery and storage conditions to ensure object safety
- Maintain digital records related to object condition, movement, and maintenance
- Assist with exhibition installation and deinstallation, including packing and coordination
- Maintain organized, clean, and safe workspaces and storage areas
- Assist with inventory of tools, supplies, and materials
- Collaborate with Collections and Curatorial staff
- Supervise contractors or interns as assigned
- Follow approved museum art handling and preventive conservation practices
- Perform additional duties as assigned and support overall museum operations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in Art History, Museum Studies or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with museum or gallery collections care, art handling, or exhibition support
- Knowledge of basic art handling, installation, and packing practices
- Ability to use tools and equipment related to collections and exhibitions
- Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and maintain a professional work environment
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and use a computer for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move materials, 25 to 30 lbs alone, 30+ lbs with assistance as needed
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or overtime as required
