What is a musculoskeletal?

A musculoskeletal job typically involves diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions affecting the muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues. Professionals in this field can include orthopedic doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, and rehabilitation specialists. Their work focuses on relieving pain, improving mobility, and enhancing the overall function of the musculoskeletal system. These roles often require medical training, certifications, and hands-on experience with patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a musculoskeletal position?

To thrive in a Musculoskeletal position—such as a musculoskeletal specialist, physiotherapist, or musculoskeletal physician—you need a strong educational background in anatomy, physiology, and evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Proficiency with diagnostic imaging tools (like MRI, X-ray), rehabilitation equipment, and, often, relevant licensure or board certification is essential. Excellent communication, patient education, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and guide patients through treatment plans. These competencies are crucial for providing effective care, ensuring patient safety, and supporting optimal recovery outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced in a musculoskeletal role and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in a musculoskeletal role is accurately diagnosing complex or overlapping conditions, which often require thorough physical assessments and interpretation of imaging results. Managing a high patient volume while maintaining individualized care can also be demanding, as each patient’s needs and recovery timelines vary. Collaborating proactively with physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals can help streamline treatment plans and improve outcomes. Staying current with advances in musculoskeletal medicine and regularly updating your clinical skills are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and providing high-quality patient care.

Job description

The Northwell Health Department of Radiology/Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell is seeking a board-certified Musculoskeletal Radiologist to join the team.

The successful candidate will have an M.D. degree with American Board of Radiology Certification, and dedicated fellowship training in musculoskeletal imaging. The position will require doing musculoskeletal ultrasound and procedures as well as musculoskeletal MR and CT imaging and radiograph interpretation. This position allows for flexibility of working locations as the division of musculoskeletal imaging provides coverage throughout the health system including sites in Manhattan, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk. Remote work is available 1-2 days per week and weekend call is taken remotely. An academic appointment with the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell is available based on the candidate's academic experience.

The musculoskeletal division consists of 16 fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists that provide musculoskeletal and procedural services at multiple tertiary and community hospitals throughout the health system in addition to ten outpatient imaging facilities stretching from Manhattan to the east end of Long Island. The division is active in the training of 70 radiology residents from three residency programs and 2 musculoskeletal imaging fellows. The MSK division interprets greater than 50,000 MRI examinations yearly along with 18,000 CT exams, 3,000 diagnostic ultrasound exams and 3,000 image guided procedures.

Northwell Health is New York State's largest health care provider and private employer, with 23 hospitals, more than 600 outpatient facilities and nearly 15,000 affiliated physicians. We care for over two million people annually in the New York metro area and beyond, thanks to philanthropic support from our communities. Our 75,000 employees - 15,000-plus nurses and 4,000 employed doctors, including members of Northwell Health Physician Partners - are working to change health care for the better. We're making breakthroughs in medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. We're training the next generation of medical professionals at the visionary Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies.

Interested candidates should email Dr. John O'Donnell, Chief, Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging, at jodonnell@northwell.edu.
