What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Multiphase Flow position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Multiphase Flow role, you need a solid background in fluid mechanics, chemical or petroleum engineering, and experience with modeling and analyzing complex fluid systems. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS Fluent, OLGA, or COMSOL, as well as relevant certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer), are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities are key soft skills for success. These skills are vital for accurately predicting flow behaviors, optimizing processes, and ensuring safety and efficiency in industries such as oil and gas or chemical engineering.

What is a Multiphase Flow job?

A Multiphase Flow job involves the study and analysis of fluids consisting of multiple phases, such as gas-liquid, liquid-solid, or gas-solid interactions. Professionals in this field work in industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, and aerospace, using computational simulations and experimental methods to optimize system performance. They may focus on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, pipeline transportation, or reactor engineering. This role requires expertise in physics, engineering, and numerical modeling tools like CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).

What are some typical daily responsibilities of a Multiphase Flow Engineer?

A Multiphase Flow Engineer typically spends their day analyzing and modeling how different phases (such as oil, gas, and water) interact within pipelines or processing systems. This involves running simulations, interpreting data from field sensors, preparing technical reports, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve operational challenges. Engineers in this role also participate in design reviews, troubleshoot flow assurance issues, and recommend optimizations to improve efficiency and safety. The balance between simulation work, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration provides a dynamic and engaging work environment.

With a nationwide footprint and opportunities for growth across multiple locations and disciplines, SPL is a place where you can build a career while making a real-world impact.
We're seeking an experienced Senior Project Scientist to lead complex flow assurance laboratory projects, provide technical direction, and ensure the delivery of high-quality customer solutions from our Katy, TX facility.
This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned flow assurance professional to help solve critical production challenges involving hydrates, paraffin, asphaltenes, scale, and other flow-restriction risks. This role combines laboratory testing, modeling, technical consulting, and practical risk-mitigation support for complex production systems, including deep-water and subsea operations.
What You'll Do
  • Plan, prioritize, schedule, and coordinate flow assurance laboratory projects, including scope, assignments, timelines, and deliverables
  • Ensure project work meets requirements for quality, accuracy, timeliness, and format
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for assigned customers and communicate project requirements, progress, findings, and recommendations
  • Lead customer meetings, define scopes of work, and prepare technical requests, cost estimates, and supporting documentation
  • Review laboratory data, calculations, reports, and deliverables for QA/QC and resolve concerns before final delivery
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to laboratory personnel, including prioritizing, scheduling, and reviewing work
  • Perform and support flow assurance testing involving hydrates, paraffin, asphaltenes, scale, and other production challenges, including data processing, troubleshooting, experimental design, method customization, and R&D as needed
  • Provide modeling and technical consulting support for deep-water production systems, subsea tiebacks, and related laboratory and engineering projects
  • Analyze laboratory and modeling data to develop practical conclusions, recommendations, and flow assurance solutions
  • Prepare and deliver professional technical reports, presentations, and customer-facing materials
  • Maintain project records and coordinate related purchasing, supply orders, expense reporting, and administrative documentation
  • Attend industry conferences, symposiums, customer meetings, and other professional events, presenting technical information as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Chemical, or Petroleum Engineering, or a related engineering or scientific field; Graduate-level degree with 5-7 years of relevant experience may be considered
  • 7-10 years of hands-on experience supporting upstream energy production projects, including flow assurance, laboratory testing, analytical instrumentation, engineering design, multiphase flow, and modeling
  • Demonstrated success leading technical projects, prioritizing work, mentoring teams, and delivering high-quality results on schedule
  • Deep-water or subsea production experience, including flow assurance risk assessment, chemical testing and selection, or production support, preferred
  • Prior experience with fluid characterization software and OLGA or comparable transient multiphase flow modeling platforms strongly preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other comparable data-processing software
  • Proven ability to analyze complex technical data, develop sound conclusions and recommendations, and prepare and deliver professional reports and presentations

What We Offer
