Compensation
Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.
Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $23.30per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)
Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $36.67per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)
In cases whereadditionalduties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant's duties, these hours shall be compensated at theappropriate TeachingAssistant rate.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.
This course focuses on the design and construction of enterprise-level systems for the storage, retrieval, and integration of big data. Students will examine distributed database architectures, data extraction/transformation/loading (ETL), replication, and concurrency control. Key topics include NoSQL, object-oriented, and multimedia databases; advanced query languages; reduction of large datasets; and the use of industry-standard tools for data processing, visualization, and interpretation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in one of the following fields:
- Information Systems and Technology
- Computer Science
- Advanced Database Design
- Data Management or a closely related discipline
Required Experience and Skills:
1. Exposure on big data storage and retrieval architectures, including:
- Enterprise data warehouse design and implementation
- Distributed databases and data replication/concurrency models
- ETL processes and data pipeline development
2. Practical experience (preferred) with:
- NoSQL and object-oriented database systems
- Multimedia databases and complex data types
- Advanced query languages and dataset reduction techniques
3. Experience in processing large-scale data using industry-standard tools, packages, or programming frameworks
4. Ability to generate and interpret data-driven visualizations for analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
1. University-level teaching Assistantship experience in database systems, information systems, or big data technologies
2. Experience in designing and delivering instruction (in-person or online)
3. Practical experience with:
- Distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark)
- Scalable storage technologies (e.g., HDFS, cloud data lakes)
- Data integration and federation tools across heterogeneous systems
4. Familiarity with real-world applications of big data systems in industry or research contexts
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving background relevant to large-scale data infrastructure
6. Experience in assisting instructors (in-person or online) with Bright Space course platform.
