Job description

The position provides student support and leadership to mitigate and eliminate barriers to educational success for students at GVSU with a specific focus on initiatives related to Asian, and Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (AAPIDA) students. This role cultivates an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA).
This is a 0.8 FTE position. The Assistant Director will work a standard 40-hour/week schedule during the Fall and Winter semesters and reduce to a 6.25 hours/week schedule during the months of June and July.

Salary & Benefits:

Minimum starting salary of$42,000,commensuratewith experience.

Primary Duties:

  • Provide student support and leadership within the Office of Multicultural Affairs and collaborate with campus partners to further divisional and university goals.

  • Develop, plan, execute, assess, and provide overall leadershipforprogramssuch asLaker Connections Welcome,Asian Student Achievement Program,Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration,andAsian Student Graduation.

  • Oversee programs and initiatives that positivelyimpactthe recruitment and retention of students, includingserving on committees devoted to policy creation, and process revision atthe university level.

  • Recruit andretainstudents;provide support, advocacy, and referralsto students bycreatingone-on-one meeting plans, developinggoals, and engagingin non-academic advisingas needed.

  • Track and assess program effectiveness, year-end reporting, andassistwith goal setting and strategic planning for theoffice.

  • Co-supervise and provide leadership tostudent employees andgraduate assistants.

  • SupportOfficeof Multicultural Affairs communication effortsbymaintainingthe center'swebsite,social media, and creating marketing materials.

  • Locate, design, and implement fundraising initiatives in conjunction with communityand campuspartners tobenefitthe populations this position serves.

  • Lead and serve as a university-wide resource for the Asian Student Union and other Asian and Pacific Islander student supports.Serve as a liaison to the Asian Faculty Staff Association.

  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.

Required Knowledge,Skillsand Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in relatedfield.

  • Minimum of three to five (3-5)yearsrelated experience and/or training or equivalent combination.

  • Experience managing and supervising teams and/or projects.

  • Experience managing websites and social media platforms.

  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Knowledge,Skillsand Abilities:

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, or related field.

  • Higher education experience.

  • Experience related to retention in higher education.

  • Familiarity with and/or experience building intersectional support structures for students.

  • Experience engaging, supporting, anddeveloping programs forDesiand Desi American students.

  • Experience in higher education working withAAPIDAstudents.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently andworkingtoward shared team goals.

  • Experience developing, administering, and evaluating student programming and events.

  • Experience developing informational presentations/workshops for groups, conferences,summitsor anylarge-grouppresentations.

  • Experience with platform-based budget management(MS Teams orWorkDay),grantwriting implementation, and assessment experience.

Working Conditions:

Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
