What is an MTS Design Engineer?

MTS Design Engineers, or Member of Technical Staff Design Engineers, are professionals responsible for designing, developing, and testing electronic systems or components, often within the semiconductor or hardware industry. They work on creating the architecture and layout of integrated circuits, chips, or related products, ensuring functionality, efficiency, and manufacturability. MTS Design Engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams, use specialized design tools, and follow industry standards to meet project requirements. Their expertise is crucial in bringing innovative electronic products to market.

What are some common challenges MTS Design Engineers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

MTS Design Engineers often work closely with various teams, such as product management, verification, and manufacturing. One common challenge is aligning design specifications with changing project requirements while maintaining clear communication across diverse groups. Additionally, balancing tight timelines with the need for thorough documentation and design reviews can be demanding. Effective collaboration requires adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and regular coordination meetings to ensure everyone stays on the same page.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MTS Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MTS Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, proficiency in circuit design, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with industry-standard design tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor Graphics, as well as experience with simulation and verification tools, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and teamwork help distinguish successful candidates in collaborative engineering environments. These competencies ensure innovative, high-quality designs that meet technical requirements and project goals.

What is the difference between Mts Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMts Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering; CAD proficiencyBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; CAD skills

Job description

Job Summary

We are seeking a Member of Technical Staff (MTS) in Analog Design to join our DRAM IP Design team. As an MTS, you will help shape the next generation of Micron’s memory products, working closely with global design, verification, and product teams to bring innovative circuit designs from concept to silicon.

Responsibilities
  • Design, optimize, and verify block‑level analog and mixed‑signal circuits for DRAM projects.
  • Propose, evaluate and implement new or improved circuit topology to further enhance PPAC of the circuit block.
  • Improve design verification scope and coverage to increase circuit robustness to enhance mass production yield.
  • Partner with global design groups and provide layout guidance through post‑layout simulation.
  • Compare silicon performance with simulation results and support correlation activities.
  • Mentor junior circuit designers and operate with minimal supervision on defining solutions and methods independently.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 12+ years of semiconductor design experience.
  • Solid analog circuit design fundamentals and experience designing fundamental analog blocks such as regulators, charge pumps, oscillators, current references, bandgaps, or comparators.
  • Proficiency with SPICE and Verilog modeling and simulation.
  • Ability to supervise physical layout work of analog circuits.
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non‑technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MSEE + 12 years or BSEE + 15 years of mixed‑signal or analog IC design experience in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Prior demonstrated experience in DRAM circuits design and 5+ years of circuit debugging experience with cross‑functional teams.
  • Good understanding of device physics and CMOS process technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability in mentoring and coaching junior engineers.
Benefits

Micron offers a choice of medical, dental and vision plans in all locations enabling team members to select the plans that best meet their family healthcare needs and budget.
