MIDNIGHT SHIFT (7.5 hours/day) or as required

This position is eligible for teleworking, which is currently 2 days per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

Job Summary:

This position plans, designs, builds, and maintains IT infrastructure and systems and provides technical guidance and support. This role develops and implements strategies for the deployment, maintenance, and support of multiple components of the IT infrastructure. This role verifies and validates systems and meets internal and external requirements. This role supports, coordinates, and manages the IT infrastructure and collaborates with other IT teams to ensure the successful implementation of projects. This role diagnoses problems and provides recommendations for improvement of existing and new systems. This role has advanced knowledge of server hardware, software configuration, networking, cloud computing, security, and experience with Windows, Linux, and virtualization. 

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a technical resource for multiple components of the infrastructure to help identify the best technical solutions. Troubleshoots infrastructure problems within assigned area(s), providing fault isolation and resolution that may be complicated by technology interdependency.
  • Reviews and approves infrastructure proposals for appropriate use of technology, ensuring the efficient use of resources and smooth transition into production.
  • Reviews solutions produced by lower-level Tech Infrastructure Engineers (Levels 1 - 5) and validates adherence to strategy and architecture standards.
  • Identifies and specifies the monitoring points to assess performance of technologies in assigned domain(s).  Recommends the necessary actions to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Leads and develops disaster recovery and contingency plans for assigned domain(s) to provide users with minimal interruptions in service.
  • Supports annual budget planning activities for computing environments.
  • Leads in planning for the future technical infrastructure architecture, providing insight into the future of assigned area of technology to continually improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Leads the development of roadmaps related to assigned area(s) of expertise to manage and meet identified technology needs
  • Leads and provides technical leadership to project teams in assigned area of expertise to promote technical understanding and talent development and/or leads teams.
  • Leads requirements management, infrastructure engineering, system testing, and acceptance testing activities across all stages and iterations for complex infrastructure development and integration initiatives.  Assists with the organization's selection, adaptation, and adoption of new models, methods, and tools. Leads/collaborates across parties involved in product, systems, or service design. 
  • May own high-value infrastructure services and/or products. Leads the definition, documentation, and successful completion of large infrastructure projects within business objectives and resource constraints, ensuring adherence to agreed enterprise architectures, and the application of effective change-, release-, risk-, and quality-management processes.
  • Manages the operational relationships with infrastructure suppliers to ensure potential disputes or conflicts are raised and resolved. Contributes technical elements of RFPs/RFIs and supports contract terms and SLAs negotiations. Manages suppliers to meet key performance indicators.
  • Continuously develops and maintains personal knowledge of tech infrastructure engineering practices, emerging trends, and technologies.
  • Leads the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of the physical IT hardware infrastructure components of systems, servers, cloud, storage, routers, switches, firewalls, data centers, and workstations.
  • Leads the technical security of the IT infrastructure (e.g., monitoring and managing the configuration of firewalls, managing access controls/operating systems/ database servers, configuring VPNs, and taking proactive measures against potential cyber threats).  Enforces defined security protocols, manages access controls, ensuring compliance with security standards, and assists in handling security incidents.
  • Leads the installation and configuration of operating systems, databases, and utilities according to organizational requirements. Conducts regular monitoring of infrastructure components and tunes them for optimal performance. Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves performance issues within the hardware/software environment.
  • Leads the implementation of local and wide-area networks (LAN and WAN), configuration of routers and switches, and determination of proper implementation of network and hardware requirements.
  • Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
  • May need to work outside of normal work hours supporting 24/7 operations (i.e., evenings and weekends).
  • Provides technical advice to project teams and mentors less experienced staff to foster talent development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Requires at least one certification in the current platform/domain/technical skill. Possible certifications could be, but are not limited to:
