Msp Project Engineer information

What is an MSP Project Engineer?

An MSP Project Engineer is an IT professional who works for a Managed Service Provider (MSP) and is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing technical projects for clients. They handle tasks such as system migrations, network upgrades, cloud deployments, and other technology initiatives. MSP Project Engineers collaborate with clients to assess needs, design solutions, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. They also provide technical expertise and troubleshooting during and after project completion.

How does an MSP Project Engineer typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during project delivery?

An MSP Project Engineer works closely with both clients and internal technical teams throughout the project lifecycle. They serve as the primary technical point of contact, gathering requirements, providing updates, and addressing concerns. Internally, they coordinate with service desk staff, network engineers, and project managers to ensure seamless implementation and timely delivery. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders are crucial for success in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MSP Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MSP Project Engineer, you need a strong foundation in IT infrastructure, networking, and systems administration, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft. Expertise with tools such as remote monitoring and management (RMM) platforms, ticketing systems, and cloud services is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure projects are delivered efficiently, client expectations are met, and technical issues are resolved proactively in managed service environments.

What is the difference between Msp Project Engineer vs Msp Project Coordinator?

AspectMsp Project EngineerMsp Project Coordinator

Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, facilities management, IT service providersProject management offices, service providers, facilities teams

The Msp Project Engineer typically handles technical planning, execution, and oversight of projects, requiring engineering knowledge and certifications. In contrast, the Msp Project Coordinator focuses on administrative tasks, scheduling, and communication to support project teams. Both roles are essential in MSP environments but differ mainly in technical responsibility and scope.

Job description

Role Overview

Proactive Technology Group is seeking a technical, execution-focused engineer to support infrastructure deployments, client implementations, and network improvements across our managed client base. This role is responsible for carrying out technical project work, resolving escalated support issues, and assisting with the deployment, configuration, and improvement of client environments.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, organized, and comfortable working across servers, Microsoft environments, end-user systems, and network infrastructure. This position works closely with our project, service, and technical teams to ensure implementations are completed correctly, consistently, and with minimal disruption to client operations.

Implementation and Project Work

  • Execute infrastructure and systems implementation tasks across client environments.

  • Deploy, configure, and support Windows servers, Microsoft 365 environments, Active Directory, and related business systems.

  • Assist with tenant migrations, server upgrades, workstation deployments, line-of-business application rollouts, and other technical projects.

  • Document completed work, configurations, and technical findings within our ticketing and documentation systems.

Network and Infrastructure Support

  • Configure and troubleshoot switches, firewalls, VLANs, wireless networks, and related infrastructure components.

  • Assist with network refreshes, site deployments, and multi-site connectivity improvements.

  • Support troubleshooting of performance, connectivity, and infrastructure-related issues across client environments.

  • Work with internal teams to validate that network and systems changes are implemented properly and operating as expected.

Client Support and Onsite Response

  • Provide escalated technical support for client issues involving servers, networking, Microsoft 365, and end-user systems.

  • Travel onsite to client locations, including hospitality environments, for implementation work, troubleshooting, and remediation of IT and network issues.

  • Support after-hours maintenance windows, project cutovers, or emergency response scenarios when required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong background in systems administration and network engineering.

  • Hands-on experience with Windows environments, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and common third-party business applications.

  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting VLANs, firewalls, switching, wireless, and general network infrastructure.

  • Ability to execute technical work independently and follow defined project or service processes.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure, network, and end-user technologies.

  • Clear communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with project managers, service teams, and client stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in an MSP or managed services environment.

  • Experience with multi-site client environments.

  • Hospitality industry experience is a plus.

  • Familiarity with server migrations, Microsoft 365 implementations, network refreshes, and infrastructure deployments.

  • Experience supporting both project-based work and escalated service issues.
