What is an MSP network engineer?

An MSP Network Engineer is an IT professional who manages, configures, and supports network infrastructure for clients of a Managed Service Provider (MSP). They are responsible for tasks such as network design, installation, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance of routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless devices. These engineers ensure that client networks are secure, reliable, and optimized for performance, often working remotely or on-site for multiple organizations. They also handle network monitoring, incident response, and implement upgrades to keep systems up-to-date.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MSP network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MSP Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking principles, protocols (such as TCP/IP, DNS, VPN), and a relevant degree or certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, firewalls, routers, switches, and remote management platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to multitask under pressure distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure reliable network performance and client satisfaction in a dynamic managed services environment.

What are some common challenges MSP network engineers face when managing multiple client networks, and how can they be addressed?

MSP Network Engineers often juggle diverse client environments, each with unique configurations, requirements, and security protocols. A frequent challenge is efficiently monitoring and troubleshooting issues across various networks while ensuring minimal downtime. To address this, engineers typically use centralized management and monitoring tools, maintain clear documentation, and implement standardized procedures where possible. Consistent communication with clients and internal teams is also crucial to quickly resolve incidents and maintain strong client relationships.

Application Deadline: 30 September 2026

Department: NOC

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Louisiana

Reporting To: Royce Pellegrin

Compensation: $90,000 - $120,000 / year

Description

In-Telecom is an award-winning managed technology partner serving more than 5,000 clients across the Gulf South and Southeast. We deliver Managed IT Services, cybersecurity, cloud communications (VoIP), fiber internet, video surveillance, and access control. Recognized on the 2026 MSP 501 and recently SOC 2 Type I attested, we pair enterprise-grade engineering with the responsiveness of a partner who genuinely cares about client success. Our values — Integrity, Excellence, and Commitment — show up in a 96%+ customer satisfaction rating. We're looking for a Senior Systems Engineer – Networking to design, deploy, and maintain secure, reliable network infrastructure for our clients and internal operations. In this senior role you'll own complex network projects end to end, resolve the escalations that stump other tiers, and mentor junior engineers along the way. If you thrive in a fast-moving managed-services environment and love solving hard problems, we'd like to meet you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain secure network infrastructure (LAN, WLAN, WAN, and SD-WAN) across multiple client environments.
  • Configure and install networking hardware and software — routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, and access points.
  • Serve as the top escalation point for complex network incidents, troubleshooting cloud and on-premises infrastructure to rapid resolution.
  • Monitor network performance, integrity, and capacity; proactively tune and optimize for reliability and scalability.
  • Design and implement network security controls, including segmentation, access authentication, VPNs, and disaster-recovery measures.
  • Automate routine tasks and monitoring using scripting to improve efficiency across managed environments.
  • Lead network assessments, migrations, and deployments for client onboarding and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Mentor and support junior network engineers and technicians on technical issues and best practices.
  • Maintain complete, accurate technical documentation, network diagrams, and status reports.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • 5–8 years of hands-on experience as a Senior Network Engineer, Systems Engineer, or Network Administrator — MSP or multi-client experience strongly preferred.
  • Solid background in network administration and architecture across enterprise environments.
  • In-depth understanding of TCP/IP and routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.
  • Hands-on expertise with network platforms (Cisco IOS, Meraki, JUNOS, or equivalent) and enterprise firewalls (Fortinet, Palo Alto, SonicWall).
  • Working knowledge of access control models, network security, and VPN technologies.
  • Experience with network monitoring and analysis tools (SolarWinds, PRTG, or similar).
  • Scripting ability for automation (Python or PowerShell).
  • Familiarity with cloud networking (Azure, AWS) and modern SD-WAN solutions.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field — or equivalent experience.
Preferred qualifications
  • CCNP or CCDP certification (CCNA required or in progress at minimum).
  • Fortinet (NSE), Palo Alto (PCNSE), or Cisco Meraki certifications.
  • Experience supporting VoIP / unified communications and QoS for voice traffic.
  • Exposure to SOC 2, HIPAA, or other compliance-driven environments.
Job Benefits
  • Competitive salary plus performance incentives.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Ongoing professional development.
