Job description

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Portland & Seattle you will enjoy a sophisticated, respected business that is flexible enough to incorporate your ideas. We are a PNW family-owned trades business, not a private-equity roll-up.
$32 to $40 / hour with full benefits (see more at the bottom of the listing)
Do you love organizing your home's garage and maintaining your personal workbench and tools in project-ready condition? Do you keep a maintenance log for your own vehicle and never miss a preventative oil or fluid change?
Are you excited by a role where you have the ear of the company's owners and senior managers and you are invited to help shape processes for inventory, fleet, and facilities management based on your prior experience and your current observations?
Are you a courteous professional who would relish equipping a team of technicians and sending them off with a smile early each morning to add more customer comments like this to the company's collection of 7,000 five-star reviews?
I called Mr. Rooter Plumbing when my basement began flooding. What a mess. Their experts were at my
home within an hour. I can't say enough about the kindness and professionalism of their team. They were so attentive to every detail and answered all my questions. The bill was a bargain given the mess. I have a new appreciation for
how hard plumbers work. (Google Review)
At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Portland & Seattle we protect the health of our community through the most clean, courteous, and professional resolution of water and wastewater system problems. While our technicians are out in the community saving the day our office and shop teams support them with equally professional business processes. We are seeking a Field Support Supervisor for our Seattle location to keep everything flowing with our inventory, vehicle and equipment fleet, and facilities.
What Mr. Rooter Plumbing expects of the Field Support Supervisor
This role is a favorite of the rest of our team. The role has two overlapping purposes. First, to ensure that our technicians are fully equipped and ready to serve when they roll to customers' homes in their service vehicles each morning. Second, to serve as the person responsible for processes that keep our warehouse inventory and van parts stock correctly sized and fully accounted for, our vehicle and equipment fleet in top mechanical condition and appearance, and our facilities organized and clean. The role will adjust and expand over time based on the skill and ambition of the Supervisor.
This is a trades business. Every team member at every level has a "get it done" attitude and pitches in with physical work. The Field Support Supervisor will also be hands-on around the shop in addition to managing the work of others and hiring specialist mechanics and contractors as needed. Initial responsibilities include:
  • Inventory planning, purchasing, and accountability. Mr. Rooter Plumbing routinely buys ~500 unique parts with inventory maintained in warehouses and stocked on each service van. Our annual parts stock spend is ~$1 million. The Specialist will apply their previous experience managing inventory and the excellent data available from our existing computer system to optimize the size and mix of the inventory, manage purchasing across a collection of competing vendors, and ensure inventory accuracy. We run a good process now that the Supervisor will continuously improve.
  • Vehicle and equipment maintenance planning and scheduling. We own a fleet of 60 vehicles, trailers, and excavators. All vehicle maintenance is performed by mechanic shops. The Supervisor will use our software tools as well as regularly vehicle inspections to plan recurring maintenance and coordinate with the mechanics. Every vehicle is equipped with GPS tracking that automatically reports mileage in our systems. We also own a collection of specialty tools and equipment for which the Supervisor will be responsible.
  • Facilities maintenance. This role is based at our Seattle, Washington location. The Supervisor will ensure the entire property presents a professional image and is well-organized and maintained, down to the detail of a well-swept parking lot. Routine janitorial duties and landscaping are not part of the role - we hire services for those functions.

The ideal candidate brings these attributes and experiences:
  • Exemplifies the courteous, professional attributes of the Mr. Rooter brand. Our team holds a demeanor of courteous professionalism to be equally important as technical competence. The same is true for technicians in the field and team members in the shop or office.
  • Experience using systems and performance measures to optimize inventory investment. Specific knowledge of plumbing parts or ServiceTitan field service management software is not required. The Supervisor will bring solid knowledge of general inventory management practices and learn the details of the plumbing industry on the job.
  • Enjoys working with their brain and their hands. This role requires good thinking to develop processes and measure performance. It also requires stocking shelves, loading vans, and the willingness to lend a hand wherever needed.
  • Early riser. The Supervisor will be the smiling face greeting the first technicians when they arrive at 7:00am every weekday. Having the warehouse ready-to-go so that techs can roll quickly to their first jobs sets the tone for the whole team's day.

How Mr. Rooter Plumbing supports the Field Support Supervisor
The Supervisor will join a supportive team in a critical role valued by everyone at the company.
Specific points of support include:
  • Supportive, knowledgeable management. This role reports directly to the VP of Field Operations, a 22-year veteran of our team who is committed to coaching and development. He has performed all of the duties of this role during his tenure. Other Field Managers on the team have also performed these duties over the years and are eager and ready to help.
  • Investment in tools and systems. We are a tech-forward organization. The company already runs a robust software package for field service management, runs cloud-based vehicle maintenance tracking tied directly to GPS, and implements basic inventory technology with barcoding scanners and daily, direct-delivery by suppliers. As the new Supervisor identifies needs for additional or upgraded tools and systems Mr. Rooter will invest.
  • Stable, recession-resistant work. Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Portland & Seattle has served the community for 30 years. Our business is built on residential repair and replacement services which are non-discretionary purchases and every home is a potential customer. Our team members feel secure in their jobs.

Total compensation and benefits include:
  • $32 to $40 / hour based on experience and skill match for the role
  • 401K with generous employer match and immediate vesting. 100% match on the first 3%, 50% on the next 2%.
  • 3 weeks of paid time off
  • 6 paid holidays
  • Excellent medical insurance with $6,180 per year paid toward your premium by Mr. Rooter
  • Company uniforms and laundry service
