Job description
Snowbird is situated in the middle of the Wasatch Mountain Range and is not only home to awe-inspiring views and mighty terrain, it is also home to employees equally as remarkable. Snowbird is continually looking for the best, those who share a passion for these mountains and the outdoors. Snowbird is a unique resort with distinct summer and winter seasons and offers full-time, part-time and seasonal positions.
TITLE: Snow Safety Supervisor - Open to Snowbird Employees Only
LOCATION: Snowbird
STATUS:Seasonal, Full-time, Salary
SCHEDULE:Winter: 5 days per week
Summer (optional): Negotiable
Months of November-April in their entirety
START DATE: October 15th, 2026
SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Snowbird Ski Patrol Director and Assistant Director of Snow Safety, you will ensure that there is always someone available to answer snow safety-related questions and assist with ongoing daily snow safety operations. You will help coordinate avalanche hazard mitigation, weather and snowpack monitoring, terrain management, staff training and assignments while supporting safe mountain operations across the resort.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Avalanche Hazard Assessment & Mitigation
- Participate in daily evaluations of snowpack stability, weather conditions, avalanche hazards, and terrain safety.
- Conduct avalanche control work using approved mitigation tools and techniques.
- Assist with route planning, hazard reduction efforts, and operational documentation.
- Maintain accurate weather observations, snowpack records, avalanche control logs, and field reports.
- Support training efforts related to hazard assessment, avalanche forecasting, control routes, and explosives handling.
Weather & Snowpack Monitoring
- Collect weather, snowpack, and field observation data to support avalanche forecasting and operational decision-making.
- Monitor weather stations, snow study plots, and remote observation systems.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and calibration of monitoring equipment.
- Communicate changing weather and snowpack conditions to Snow Safety leadership and operational departments.
Safety Oversight & Terrain Management
- Monitor avalanche terrain, closures, hazard zones, and mountain boundaries daily.
- Erect and maintain signs, ropes, closures, and hazard markers in accordance with Snowbird policies.
- Identify and address safety hazards proactively and communicate major concerns to Ski Patrol and Snow Safety leadership.
- Assist with training staff in hazard recognition, terrain management, and safe mountain travel practices.
Emergency Response Support
- Assist Ski Patrol with emergency first aid response, avalanche rescue operations, evacuations, and incident management when required.
- Follow established protocols and maintain accurate documentation.
- Organize and facilitate rescue trainings and preparedness exercises.
Equipment & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Repair, maintain, inspect, and inventory snow safety equipment, weather stations, communication systems, rescue gear, signage, and explosives-related equipment.
- Ensure proper storage, documentation, and compliance procedures for explosives and related materials.
- Assist in training staff in equipment use, maintenance standards, and safety procedures.
Team Wellness & Communication
- Daily risk communications to the ski patrol.
- Public outreach to concerned parties looking to Snowbird for avalanche expertise.
- Foster clear communication and collaboration between Snow Safety, Ski Patrol, Lift Operations, and Mountain Operations.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and safety.
- Communicate with outside agencies (Alta, UDOT, SLC SAR, UAC, etc.) and maintain good relations.
Training & Mentoring
- Train and mentor Snow Safety team members in snow science, avalanche operations, weather monitoring, explosives handling, and mountain safety procedures.
- Assist with onboarding and continuing education efforts.
- Support professional development and operational readiness throughout the team.
Daily Operations
- Assist in supervising day-to-day Snow Safety operations, ensuring all assigned tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Help coordinate staff assignments, route coverage, operational priorities, and project completion.
- Manage inventory, field documentation, and operational records.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Continuing Professional Development
- Assist with and actively learn more about technologies that either enhance avalanche risk communications, improve weather or avalanche observations, or improve operational efficiency.
- Actively obtains continuing professional development in the form of Snow and Avalanche workshops, classes, or certifications.
WHAT YOU NEED TO GET THE JOB DONE
Physical Requirements
- Advanced Skiing Ability: Must be able to ski all off-trail terrain at Snowbird confidently and safely in all weather and snow conditions.
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift 80 lbs, including rescue equipment, explosives, scientific instruments, weather station components, and operational supplies while traveling in steep and variable terrain.
- Standing for Long Periods: Must be able to stand for extended periods while conducting observations, monitoring terrain, and performing operational duties.
- Bending, Kneeling, Reaching, and Grasping: Must be able to perform these movements while conducting snow studies, handling equipment, performing maintenance, and traveling in mountainous terrain.
- Exposure to Cold and Extreme Weather: Work is outdoors in cold, windy, snowy, and other extreme weather conditions, requiring long periods of exposure.
- Use of Explosives: Ability to safely handle explosives for avalanche mitigation and obtain and maintain any required permits, certifications, and background clearances.
- Use of Rescue and Snow Safety Equipment: Ability to operate snowmobiles, avalanche transceivers, radios, weather instrumentation, ropes, and related mountain safety equipment.
- Frequent Interruptions: Ability to maintain focus and accuracy while responding to changing weather conditions, operational priorities, and emergency situations.
- Frequent Physical Activity: Regular physical activity, including skiing, hiking in deep snow, shoveling, digging snow pits, maintaining weather stations, and transporting equipment over challenging terrain.
Mental and Interpersonal Requirements
- Critical Thinking in Dynamic Conditions: Ability to assess rapidly changing weather, snowpack, and avalanche conditions and make sound operational recommendations.
- Risk Assessment and Decision Making: Ability to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and participate in mitigation efforts that support guest and employee safety.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with Snow Safety leadership, Ski Patrol, dispatch, Mountain Operations, and other resort departments.
- Customer Service: Provide courteous, professional interactions with guests, employees, and partners while representing Snowbird's commitment to safety.
- Stress Management: Ability to work effectively during storms, avalanche cycles, emergency situations, and operationally demanding conditions.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with Snow Safety staff, Ski Patrol, Lift Operations, and other departments to support safe mountain operations.
- Learning and Adherence to Policies: Must be able to learn, understand, and apply snow safety procedures, operational standards, explosives regulations, and resort policies.
- Attention to Detail: Maintain accurate weather observations, control records, operational documentation, and field reports.
- Overnight Stays: Must be prepared to stay overnight during occasional road closures.
Specific Qualifications
- 5+ years of Snowbird job-specific work experience with demonstrated competence.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Current CPR certification.
- OEC Certification required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Teams, and Excel.
WORK SCHEDULE
- Shifts vary and may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overnight storm shifts, and extended operational periods depending on weather conditions and business levels.
