Job description


Garrett Advancing Motion is the true pioneer of automotive powertrain technologies dating back more than 60 years. It continues today as the world's leader in technology solutions for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and off- highway equipment. Garrett supplies technology to nearly all major automakers in addition to the global aftermarket under the Garrett brand name. As a result, unlike many other OEM or supplier organizations, Garrett Advancing Motion has visibility across a broad range of OEM's and Tier 1 suppliers.
Garrett's OE Motorsport department is hiring a Motorsport and Performance Operations Leader who will be based in our Torrance, California facility. This person will be responsible for leading the production team for our bespoke turbocharger & turbomachinery solutions, delivered to OE racing teams and racing engine manufacturers around the world, plus production for large frame Aftermarket Performance products as used in top-level amateur racing. Garrett Motorsport has been a leader in the OE racing industry as a small business unit within Garrett since the 1990s. The Motorsport and Performance Operations Leader will be joining a mature, efficient, highly functional team that operates quickly to get results, with an unwavering customer focus.
The Motorsport and Performance Operations Leader will have a full-time, on-site work schedule.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Motorsport Quality and Production Management
Manage Motorsport production planning and scheduling, and manage Motorsport quality, supporting customer demand via order board.
  • Own and facilitate the bi-weekly Operations Meeting for Motorsport.
  • Coordinate workload in Quality Control department to ensure flow of incoming parts from suppliers is inspected on time to demand.
  • Coordinate wheel balancing workload to ensure flow of parts on time to demand.
  • Move material logically within plant to drive manufacturing process.
  • Coordinate turbocharger assembly workload to ensure timely manufacturing of end products on time to customer demand.
  • Collaborate with on-site Motorsport Development Engineers to ensure quality and timing of components and assemblies is meeting required targets.
  • Manage shipping & receiving needs to ensure flow of incoming and outgoing materials.
  • Own 5S process for Motorsport workshop areas to ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety.
  • Represent Motorsport Operations in site-level Safety Committee.

Motorsport Purchasing
Act as primary buyer for Torrance Motorsport components, negotiating pricing, generating purchase orders, tracking deliveries, and resolving issues with Motorsport-specific supplier base plus Intercompany parts supply from other Garrett facilities, and indirect materials such as tools and supplies, and services.
  • Generate daily requisition reports, request quotes from suppliers, meet with suppliers regularly to manage open order workload.
  • Create, adjust, and expedite parts orders as needed to meet business demands.
  • Manage Goods Receipt of all incoming shipments, then manage internal flow of parts into QC, warehousing, and manufacturing.
  • Engage with Trade Compliance team for import/export support as needed.
  • Collaborate with Motorsport Manager and Motorsport Supplier Quality Leader to identify, engage with, evaluate, and develop new suppliers, and to address quality issues at existing suppliers together with Engineering.

Motorsport Warehouse Management
Own the Torrance Motorsport inventory; lead periodic review meeting to ensure correct physical stock and safety stock for components.
  • Process internal parts movements inside warehouse.
  • Maintain warehouse accuracy of 99.9% vs records, ensuring organization, labeling, and control of material movements.
  • Assist Motorsport Manager with quarterly Excess & Obsolete report to identify parts which must be retained, and parts which can be dispositioned or scrapped.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual Physical Inventory process for Motorsport, together with Motorsport Manager and site Finance support team.
  • Ensure Motorsport warehouse is stocked with all required packaging materials, consumables, and tools necessary to produce our products.
  • Own 5S process for Motorsport warehouse to ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety.

Garrett Garage Operations Management
Oversee operations in Torrance Aftermarket's Garrett Garage plant, including warehousing, purchasing, and manufacturing.
  • Participate in bi-weekly Operations Meeting for Garrett Garage.
  • Manage on-site Garrett Garage Planner and Aftermarket Technician as part of direct team.
  • Support Garrett Garage personnel regarding technical issues, resource planning, incoming material purchasing, warehousing, and manufacturing.
  • Act as primary backup for Garrett Garage Planner / Buyer / Scheduler when they are out of office.
  • Coordinate with Aftermarket Engineering, Sales, Program Management, and Purchasing as needed to ensure timely support of New Product Introductions and ongoing customer orders to be built and shipped.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual Physical Inventory process for Garrett Garage, together with Motorsport Manager and site Finance support team.
  • Own 5S process for Garrett Garage workshop and warehouse areas to ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High school or equivalent education
  • 5 years minimum work experience in engineering, R&D, or manufacturing - for either low volume, prototype, or high-volume production.
  • 2 years minimum experience in purchasing - automotive, aerospace, or industrial.
  • Negotiation skills required for interactions with suppliers regarding timing and cost.
  • Strong, confident, and organized people management and time management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints / engineering drawings to ensure manufacturing and quality requirements are met.
  • Ability to network internally and leverage other parts of the organization.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • 2+ years' experience managing a small, highly functional team towards a common goal.
  • Prior experience as a shop supervisor, manufacturing supervisor, or operations lead is preferred.
  • Previous mechanical assembly and rebuild experience preferred; you will be leading a team of technicians, therefore familiarity with complex machinery, assembly, and rebuild work is a major enabler.
  • Experience in any or all of the following fields: turbomachinery, internal combustion engines, business-critical mechanical equipment, electric powertrain.
  • Experience with SAP ERP for purchasing plus management of quality, inventory, and production.

The salary range for this role is between $105K and $171K.
*Note that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience. In exceptional circumstances, compensation may exceed the posted salary range.
