Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

The City of Virginia Beach is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I. This position is with the Department of Public Works - Street Maintenance group; duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, concrete, and asphalt.

  • Operate a light-duty truck to transport tools, equipment, and supplies to and from job sites for maintenance and repair.

  • Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.

  • Operate a pothole patcher truck and roller to repair minor roadway defects.

  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.

  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

  • Must comply with safety and drug testing requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing under federal and organizational policies.

An ideal candidate:

  • Experience in construction, asphalt, or concrete

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday; 6:30 am - 5:00 pm

Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License - Class B (VA or NC)

CDL Hiring Bonus:

Newly hired employees with a valid Class B or A CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

  • $1,000 with first paycheck

  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver's license.Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
