Job description

This position is central to the missionaries' role to 'Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.' This position is a support, individual contributor that tutors language skills to a variety of audiences, including young missionaries, senior missionaries, and church leaders, as assigned. The training may occur in person, or via video conferencing. 

Missionary training centers (MTCs) help missionaries understand, live, and apply the missionary purpose as stated on page one of Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Missionary Service. Missionaries learn and teach the doctrine of Christ from the Book of Mormon. They learn how to be more effective teachers by studying and practicing the principles in Preach My Gospel. They also learn how to adjust to missionary life and how to live missionary standards. Missionaries who are assigned to learn a mission language will also begin learning this language in the MTC.

Required:

1 year of related experience

Fluency in specified foreign language

 Must be able to understand and communicate effectively in English to understand safety instructions, training, and team communications. Candidates must be able to successfully complete interviews and assessments fully in English with no translation services provided in order to assess English proficiency abilities 

Excellent tutoring and teaching skills

Excellent interpersonal, prioritizing, and leadership skills. 

Knowledge and understanding of "Preach My Gospel"

Ability to communicate (verbal and written) in English and specified second language, both in person and via video conferencing

Self-motivated

Able to work well with people

To successfully perform the essential functions of the job, there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using monitors/equipment.

Preferred:

Experience as a language tutor

Experience as a MTC Teacher Returned missionary

Reports to supervisor level in the Training Department.

Provides language tutoring to missionaries, Mission Presidents, General Authorities and their wives, and others as directed.

Designs lessons and learning experiences to help individual missionaries progress with their personal language goals.

Works to improve tutoring skills

Prepares daily to meet individual needs.

Sets a good example of an MTC employee, in any venue

May be asked to assist in assessing the proficiency level of missionaries and teacher applicants in the target language

May take on responsibilities as an MTC Teacher, as hours allow

May include other temporary assigned duties at the MTC (e.g. assisting with Mission Leadership Seminar)
