What is a Moldflow job?

A Moldflow job typically involves using Autodesk Moldflow software to analyze and optimize plastic injection molding processes. Professionals in this role conduct simulations to predict potential defects, improve mold designs, and enhance manufacturing efficiency. They often work closely with design engineers and manufacturers to ensure high-quality plastic parts while minimizing production costs. Strong expertise in materials, fluid dynamics, and computer-aided engineering (CAE) is essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Moldflow position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Moldflow analyst or specialist, you need a strong background in plastics engineering, injection molding processes, and simulation analysis, typically backed by an engineering degree. Proficiency with Autodesk Moldflow software, CAD programs, and familiarity with manufacturing standards or relevant certifications like Six Sigma are highly advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with design and production teams. Mastering these abilities ensures accurate simulations, optimizes manufacturing processes, and enables successful project delivery in competitive engineering environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Moldflow specialists in their daily work?

Moldflow specialists often deal with tight project deadlines, managing complex simulation data, and adapting to changes in part or mold designs. Frequently, they must troubleshoot issues involving material properties, cooling systems, or manufacturing constraints, requiring analytical thinking and effective communication with cross-functional teams such as product designers and manufacturers. Staying updated with evolving software features and industry best practices also presents a learning curve. However, overcoming these challenges can be highly rewarding and provides opportunities to reduce costs, improve product quality, and advance within the broader field of manufacturing engineering.

Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, ITT has a market cap of roughly $20 billion and employs more than 15,000 people across 40 countries and serves customers in approximately 125 countries. Following the acquisition of SPX FLOW, the company is expected to generate $5.4 billion in annual revenue.

Our businesses are organized in three distinct segments, each based around our core engineering DNA:

Flow Technologies: A global leader in, providing a broad portfolio of pumps, valves, mixing and agitation equipment, heat transfer, homogenizers, separation, water and wastewater treatment, and engineered process solutions. Our leading brands include the iconic Goulds Pumps (with more than 175 years of history), Anhydro, APV, Bornemann, Bran+Luebbe, Cโ€™treat, Engineered Valves, Gerstenberg Schrรถder, Goulds Pumps, Habonim, Johnson Pump, Lightnin, Philadelphia, Plenty, PRO Cast, Rheinhรผtte, Seital Separation, Stelzer, Svanehรธj, Tigerholm, Uutechnic, VIDAR, Waukesha Cherry-Burrell.

Motion Technologies: A global leader in brake pads (ICE and electrified brake pads) and shock absorbers (energy absorption solutions) for transportation applications. Our leading brands include Friction Technologies, KONI and Axtone.

Connect and Control Technologies: A leader in critical applications for the aerospace, defense and industrial markets, including harsh environment connectors and control components. Our leading brands include ITT Cannon, Enidine, Aerospace Controls and kSARIA.

The NPI Mold Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing new injection molds, tooling, and manufacturing processes that support the launch of new Mil/Aero interconnect products at ITT Cannon. This role ensures that connector componentsโ€”particularly highprecision molded insulators, inserts, seals, and other engineered polymer partsโ€”are tooled and manufactured to meet rigorous industry standards (MILDTL, AS9100) and customer requirements.

The engineer plays a key role in crossfunctional NPI teams and supports concept development, DFM/DFA, mold flow simulation, tooling validation, and production readiness activities.

Mold & Tooling Design

  • Design highprecision injection molds (single- and multicavity) for thermoplastic, thermoset, and elastomer components used in Mil/Aero connector products.
  • Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and specification packages using CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, NX preferred).
  • Conduct DFM/DFA analysis to ensure mold designs support manufacturability, dimensional accuracy, and longterm tooling reliability.
  • Perform mold flow analysis using Moldflow, Sigmasoft, or equivalent software to assess gate location, fill patterns, warp, cooling, venting, and material behavior.
  • Collaborate with internal tooling shops and external toolmakers to refine designs and ensure tooling feasibility.

New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineering

  • Participate in gate reviews, project planning, and crossfunctional NPI engineering meetings.
  • Translate product design intent into robust tooling concepts and manufacturing solutions.
  • Define material selections, molding parameters, and processing requirements for new connector components.
  • Support prototyping, sample builds, and EVT/DVT/PVT phases.
  • Drive part qualification activities including FAI, PPAP, capability studies, and mold validation protocols.
