What is a Mohs medical assistant?

Mohs medical assistants are specialized healthcare professionals who assist dermatologists during Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer. Their responsibilities include preparing patients for surgery, setting up and sterilizing instruments, assisting during the procedure, and providing post-operative care instructions. They also help with specimen handling and documentation. Mohs medical assistants play a crucial role in ensuring the surgery is efficient, safe, and comfortable for the patient.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Mohs medical assistant during surgical procedures?

A Mohs Medical Assistant typically supports the dermatologist by preparing patients for Mohs micrographic surgery, assisting with sterile technique, and handling surgical instruments. They are responsible for accurately labeling and transporting tissue specimens to the laboratory, maintaining patient comfort, and updating medical records. Additionally, they help with wound care, provide post-operative instructions, and ensure the surgical suite is clean and well-stocked, contributing to efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mohs medical assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mohs Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of dermatology procedures, sterile technique, and experience with patient care, often supported by a medical assistant certification or relevant training. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), surgical instruments, and specimen handling is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and compassionate patient communication help you stand out in this role. These skills are essential for supporting Mohs surgeries efficiently, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining a smooth workflow in a high-precision clinical environment.
