What is a Mohs assistant?

A Mohs Assistant is a healthcare professional who supports dermatologists during Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise technique for treating skin cancer. Their duties include preparing patients, assisting with surgical procedures, processing and staining tissue samples, and maintaining sterile environments. Mohs Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure by working closely with both the surgeon and laboratory staff. They often have backgrounds as medical assistants or histotechnicians and receive specialized training in Mohs surgery protocols.

What does a Mohs assistant do?

A typical day for a Mohs Assistant involves preparing patients for Mohs micrographic surgery, assisting the surgeon during tissue removal, and handling specimen processing for lab analysis. Mohs Assistants work closely with dermatologists, histotechnologists, and nurses to ensure accurate mapping, labeling, and documentation of tissue samples. Collaboration and effective communication are essential, as the Mohs Assistant often acts as a liaison between the surgery and lab teams to help facilitate a smooth workflow and optimal patient care.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Mohs assistant?

To thrive as a Mohs Assistant, you need a solid background in medical assisting, knowledge of dermatologic procedures, and often a certification such as CMA or RMA. Familiarity with surgical instruments, tissue processing equipment, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems is typically required. Attention to detail, patient empathy, and strong organizational skills help you excel in this patient-focused and precise environment. These competencies ensure accurate specimen handling, support effective teamwork, and contribute to optimal patient care during Mohs surgeries.
