Job description

Samtec is seeking a Process Development Engineer for our Colorado Springs, CO location. This is a Monday through Friday day shift position. Salary is $110,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year inclusive of applicable bonus(s) and commensurate with experience. The Process Development Engineer works collaboratively with Design Engineers, Product Engineers and Operations to develop and implement new manufacturing processes, which support next generation of Samtec Optics products. The Process Development Engineer leads engineering studies (DOEs, FMEAs) and troubleshoots technical issues. The ideal candidate has experience with microelectronics assembly and/or optics manufacturing. Alternatively, a strong candidate has experience developing robust manufacturing processes in a related field.
 
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Execute experiments to identify key process variables using DOE type methodologies or other analytical methods.
  • Develop and document manufacturing best practices, parameters, and process windows into control plans and work instructions that support new product development.
  • Use Six Sigma DMAIC process or other similar methods to determine root cause/solutions to process challenges.
  • Use statistical methods and conduct process capability studies to determine if the processes are meeting key process requirements. 
  • Develop process criteria to determine if new processes are ready for full volume production.
  • Collect and interpret data from other technical and operating staff involved.
  • Perform engineering calculations based on statistical data and utilize that information to drive process improvements and implement effective manufacturing strategies.
  • Provide general guidance, direction, and support to other departments/sites that utilize the same manufacturing processes.
*The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position.  Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities. * 
 
Required Experience:
  • At least five years of experience in process development for manufacturing, with an emphasis on new process development. Experience with optical alignment also preferred, or alternatively, experience with other critical alignment processes – such as die attach to the micron level.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a creative mindset.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design, interpretation of drawings, CTQ and tolerance analysis (GD&T).
  • Ability to support multiple projects and collaborate across departments. 
  • Self-starting, self-directed with very good influential, organizational and communication skills.
 
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with opto-electronics module assembly is highly desirable.
  • Six Sigma or Problem-Solving background is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing experience is also advantageous.
 
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics or a related field is required
