Job description


The Furniture Technician is responsible for the installation, assembly, maintenance, repair, relocation, and reconfiguration of office furniture and workspace systems within a secure building. This position supports daily facility operations by ensuring workspaces are functional, safe, and configured to meet organizational requirements while complying with all Company security, safety, and confidentiality policies. All duties are to be performed in accordance with NMS' mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
  • Assemble, install, disassemble, relocate, and reconfigure office furniture, modular workstations, cubicles, desks, chairs, shelving, and related furnishings.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on office furniture and workstation systems.
  • Respond to work orders for furniture moves, office reconfigurations, and equipment installations.
  • Coordinate workspace setup for new employees, office relocations, conferences, and special events.
  • Inspect furniture for damage or safety concerns and perform or coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of furniture, parts, tools, and related equipment.
  • Assist with receiving, unloading, and staging furniture deliveries.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, dollies, and material-handling equipment.
  • Coordinate work activities with Facility Management, Building Administration, contractors, and security personnel.
  • Maintain accurate work order documentation and inventory records.
  • Ensure all work complies with Company policies, safety standards, ergonomic guidelines, and security procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of facility operations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in furniture installation, office systems installation, facilities maintenance, carpentry, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with modular office furniture systems (e.g., Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth, or similar) preferred.
  • Must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, which may include a criminal background check, drug screening, physical examination, fit-for-duty assessment, and hearing test. Applicants who do not reside near an approved testing facility are responsible for travel expenses to the nearest testing location.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining positive relationships with employees, customers, and clients.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required security clearances and successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Valid driver's license may be required depending on work location.
  • Ability to read work orders, furniture layouts, and basic floor plans.
  • Knowledge of office furniture installation, assembly, repair, and workspace configuration.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to interpret furniture layouts, installation instructions, and floor plans.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Frequently to constantly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
Fit For Duty Test:
  • Lift: Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulders x 2
  • Push: Push horizontally with a peak force of 75 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross over toe touches x 10 each side, self-paced but continuous.
  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous.
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 10 for each knee, self-pace but continuous.
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 12 steps x 5 for a total of 60 steps; o Allow 30 second rest after climbing up and down each set of 30 steps.
  • Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 12 steps x 2 for a total of 24 steps while carrying 40 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced but continuous.
    • Allow a 30 second rest period after climbing up and down 12 steps while carrying.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 8 rungs x 8 repetitions for a total of 64 rungs;
    • Allow 30 second rests after each climb (up and down) of 16 rungs, self-paced.
  • Shovel: Perform a shovel test for three (3) minutes self-paced but continuous (i.e., no breaks) using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb. weight attached to the shovel blade. (e.g. sand bag weight securely taped to the shovel blade.)
