Job description

Modeling & Simulation Engineer

Location: Redstone Arsenal (Huntsville, Alabama)

Position Overview:

Crossflow Technologies seeks an engineer to support the development, integration, and application of modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities for hypersonic systems. This role will focus on integrating disparate engineering models and simulation tools into efficient analytical workflows, conducting hypersonic trajectory and aerothermal analyses, and developing software to automate simulation setup, execution, and post-processing. The engineer will work across software development and aerospace engineering disciplines to evaluate vehicle performance throughout hypersonic flight environments and improve the tools and processes used to perform multidisciplinary analysis. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrate, maintain, and enhance M&S tools by connecting standalone engineering models and simulation applications into unified analytical workflows.
  • Develop Python-based software, scripts, and automation for simulation setup, execution, data processing, and analysis.
  • Generate, evaluate, and optimize hypersonic vehicle trajectories across relevant mission and flight conditions.
  • Perform aerothermal analyses to characterize vehicle and system performance throughout hypersonic flight.
  • Develop and maintain pre-processing and post-processing workflows for structural, thermal, and aerothermal models.
  • Extract, process, visualize, and interpret simulation results to support engineering assessments and design decisions.
  • Support finite element analysis (FEA) workflows, including preparation and generation of computational meshes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, repeatability, and robustness of multidisciplinary analysis pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot integration, execution, and data-interface issues across engineering models and simulation tools.
  • Develop and maintain software using GitLab, version control, code review, testing, documentation, and other software development best practices.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate trajectory, aerothermal, structural, and other analysis capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering or technical discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, particularly for scientific computing, engineering analysis, scripting, or workflow automation.
  • Experience developing or integrating modeling and simulation tools or engineering analysis software.
  • Experience automating simulation workflows, including model configuration, execution, and processing of simulation outputs.
  • Understanding of hypersonic flight mechanics and trajectory analysis.
  • Understanding of aerodynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and aerothermal effects relevant to high-speed flight.
  • Experience analyzing engineering or simulation data and communicating results to technical stakeholders.
  • Experience using Git/GitLab or comparable configuration-management and collaborative software-development tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues spanning software, simulation models, inputs, outputs, and computational environments.
  • Active Secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience generating, analyzing, or optimizing hypersonic vehicle trajectories.
  • Experience conducting aerothermal analysis of hypersonic vehicles across varying flight conditions.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) and structural or thermal modeling.
  • Experience with mesh generation and preparation of models for numerical analysis.
  • Experience coupling or integrating multidisciplinary engineering models, such as trajectory, aerodynamics, aerothermal, thermal, and structural models.
  • Familiarity with scientific Python libraries and numerical methods used for engineering analysis.
  • Experience developing pre-processing and post-processing tools for large or complex simulation datasets.
  • Experience creating reproducible and automated engineering analysis pipelines.
  • Familiarity with high-performance or distributed computing environments used for computational engineering analysis.

GENEROUS PTO ACCRUAL & FLEXIBLE LEAVE POLICY

Crossflow currently grants 11 federally observed paid holidays. In addition to these holidays, Crossflow offers a minimum of 2 weeks of paid time off (PTO) to all full-time employees. Employees may utilize PTO for any reason (sickness, vacation, personal day, etc.) and can carry over a maximum of 120 hours from year to year. Many employees are authorized to work additional hours within a normal, forty-hour pay period. This approval is included in the employee's offer letter for employment.
