How much do modeling simulation engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for modeling simulation engineer in Ohio is $117,315.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $87,500.00 and $139,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Modeling Simulation Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, physics, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant engineering or science degree. Proficiency with simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS, or similar tools, and sometimes certifications in systems engineering or modeling methodologies, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These qualifications are crucial for accurately representing complex systems, translating requirements into effective models, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals.

What does a Modeling Simulation Engineer do?

A Modeling Simulation Engineer develops virtual models and simulations to analyze complex systems and processes. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and data analysis to predict system performance and optimize designs before physical implementation. These engineers typically work in industries like aerospace, defense, automotive, and healthcare to improve efficiency, safety, and decision-making. Their role often involves coding, algorithm development, and working with simulation software to test real-world scenarios in a virtual environment.

What are the typical responsibilities and project stages for a Modeling Simulation Engineer?

Modeling Simulation Engineers are responsible for developing mathematical models, running simulations, analyzing results, and providing recommendations to improve system performance or design. Projects often begin with understanding client or stakeholder requirements, followed by designing models based on those needs and iteratively refining them as data is collected. Engineers work closely with design, hardware, and software teams to validate models and ensure alignment with real-world performance. Collaborating with colleagues and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences are routine aspects of the job, making cross-functional communication vital for project success.

Job description

Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A) Systems Engineer
We are currently seeking a Mid-level Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A) Engineer with experience in high-fidelity mission and sensor modeling, digital engineering methods, and advanced simulation tools for our growing business in Dayton, Ohio. This position is on-site at Wright-Patterson AFB.
HOW WILL THIS POSITION CONTRIBUTE?
  • Mission: Using systems engineering best practices, digital engineering approaches, and high-fidelity Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis (MS&A), design, develop, validate, and document mission and sensor-level simulations that support advanced weapon systems and multi-domain operational concepts.
  • How: Apply industry-standard simulation frameworks and modeling methodologies to assess system requirements, perform trade studies, develop mission/sensor-level models, validate simulation outputs, integrate digital engineering workflows, and deliver data-driven insights for government and industry partners.

WHAT SKILLS ARE NEEDED?
  • Required:
    • Experience in one or more of the following:
      • High-fidelity mission-level modeling and simulation (e.g., AFSIM, NGTS, JSE)
      • Systems modeling, performance assessment, and lifecycle analysis
      • Agile and Digital engineering workflows, including MBSE alignment and model validation
      • Probabilistic analysis, algorithm development, or simulation-based system evaluation
      • Familiarity with MBSE Tools (e.g. Cameo, Sparx Enterprise Architect, and/or Visual Paradigm.)
      • Familiarity with programming:
        • a systems language (such as C or C++), and/or
        • a high-level language (such as Python, MATLAB), and
    • Ability to direct customer engagement and facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis
    • Ability to develop critical M&S inputs, including framework definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis, and implementation
    • Willingness to learn from others.
    • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, operations research, computer science, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Applicants must be US citizens capable of obtaining and maintaining a US DoD security clearance.

Desired or Will Train:
    • At least 5 years of professional experience in MS&A, systems engineering, or mission analysis.
    • Expertise in AFSIM-based modeling, algorithm development, or advanced simulation toolchains.
    • Experience evaluating system performance through digital twins or MBSE-integrated simulation architectures
