What is a modeling simulation analyst?

Modeling Simulation Analysts are professionals who use mathematical models, simulations, and analytical techniques to study complex systems and predict their behavior. They help organizations make informed decisions by evaluating scenarios, testing hypotheses, and optimizing processes through virtual models. These analysts work in various industries, including defense, healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation, to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support planning and strategy. Their work often involves collaboration with engineers, scientists, and decision-makers to interpret simulation results and implement solutions.

How does a modeling simulation analyst typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Modeling Simulation Analysts frequently work alongside engineers, data scientists, and project managers to develop and refine simulation models. Collaboration often involves gathering system requirements, validating model assumptions with subject matter experts, and presenting simulation results to stakeholders. Clear communication is essential, as analysts must translate complex simulation data into actionable insights for decision-makers. Regular team meetings and iterative feedback are common to ensure the models accurately reflect real-world scenarios and project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modeling simulation analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling Simulation Analyst, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree such as in engineering or applied mathematics. Proficiency in simulation software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, Arena), programming languages (such as Python or C++), and familiarity with data analysis tools are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These abilities are vital for developing accurate models, interpreting complex data, and clearly presenting findings to support strategic decision-making.

What is the difference between Modeling Simulation Analyst vs Data Analyst?

Job description

JRAD is seeking candidates for an upcoming Engineer-Modeling & Simulation (Senior) position supporting the U.S. Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC), Detachment 6 (DET 6) – Fighter Test Services (FTS). This position is located at Nellis AFB, NV.

The Engineer-Modeling & Simulation (Senior) provides advanced engineering expertise in the design, development, integration, and application of modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities to support operational test and evaluation (OT&E) of fighter aircraft systems under the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) Detachment 6 Fighter Test Services contract.

Leads the development and application of high-fidelity models, simulations, and distributed test environments, including the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE), to evaluate system effectiveness, suitability, survivability, and mission performance in operational conditions. Integrates simulation results with live flight test data to provide comprehensive, decision-quality assessments.

Serves as a senior technical authority supporting M&S activities across all phases of the OT&E lifecycle, ensuring analytical rigor, model credibility, and alignment with mission objectives.

Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Lead design, development, integration, and execution of modeling and simulation (M&S) systems supporting operational test and evaluation
  • Develop and apply high-fidelity models and simulations representing aircraft systems, sensors, weapons, and operational environments
  • Support development and execution of distributed test environments, including integration with the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE)
  • Validate and verify models and simulations, including correlation of simulation outputs with live flight test data
  • Define simulation scenarios, operational conditions, and evaluation criteria aligned with OT&E objectives
  • Analyze simulation outputs and integrate results with operational test data to assess system performance and mission effectiveness
  • Conduct trade studies, sensitivity analyses, and scenario-based assessments using M&S tools
  • Identify limitations, assumptions, and uncertainties in models and simulations and assess their impact on evaluation results
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and journeyman engineers and analysts
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including aerospace engineers, operations research analysts, data analysts, and intelligence personnel
  • Support real-time and post-test analysis during simulation and test events
  • Develop and review technical documentation, including model descriptions, validation reports, and evaluation summaries
  • Advise government leadership on M&S capabilities, limitations, and analytical findings
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, verification and validation (V&V) requirements, and security protocols

Required Skills and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (e.g., Aerospace, Systems, Electrical, Computer Engineering) or a related technical discipline
  • 10 or more years of relevant professional experience in modeling and simulation, systems engineering, or related technical fields
  • Experience supporting operational test and evaluation (OT&E) activities within AFOTEC or similar test organizations
  • Familiarity with fighter aircraft systems (e.g., F-35, F-16, F-15) and air combat operations
