What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Modeling Simulation Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling Simulation Analyst, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree such as in engineering or applied mathematics. Proficiency in simulation software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, Arena), programming languages (such as Python or C++), and familiarity with data analysis tools are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These abilities are vital for developing accurate models, interpreting complex data, and clearly presenting findings to support strategic decision-making.

How does a Modeling Simulation Analyst typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Modeling Simulation Analysts frequently work alongside engineers, data scientists, and project managers to develop and refine simulation models. Collaboration often involves gathering system requirements, validating model assumptions with subject matter experts, and presenting simulation results to stakeholders. Clear communication is essential, as analysts must translate complex simulation data into actionable insights for decision-makers. Regular team meetings and iterative feedback are common to ensure the models accurately reflect real-world scenarios and project goals.

What are Modeling Simulation Analysts?

Modeling Simulation Analysts are professionals who use mathematical models, simulations, and analytical techniques to study complex systems and predict their behavior. They help organizations make informed decisions by evaluating scenarios, testing hypotheses, and optimizing processes through virtual models. These analysts work in various industries, including defense, healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation, to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support planning and strategy. Their work often involves collaboration with engineers, scientists, and decision-makers to interpret simulation results and implement solutions.

What is the difference between Modeling Simulation Analyst vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Are you ready to build America's energy future? Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company. We're revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what's possible, we're giving clean energy a whole new form!
In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a "Best Invention", MIT Technology Review as a "Top Climate Tech Company To Watch", and Fast Company as "One of the Next Big Things In Tech". We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.
Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it's a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing - might be the most exciting moment in the company's history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better.
Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you've come to the right place.
Role Description
The Mechanical Engineering team at Form designs the battery cell, module, and system enclosure at the core of our utility-scale, multi-day energy storage system - optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost at high-volume manufacturing scale at Form Factory.
We're hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our newly formed Modeling, Simulation & Analysis team within the Electro-Mechanical Hardware organization - Form's center of excellence for structural and thermal/fluid simulation (FEA/CFD), mechanical architecture trade studies, and model validation. Your team's analyses will drive design direction before hardware is built, and correlate models against prototype and factory test data so we trust what the models tell us. You'll partner closely with EE, cell performance, system modeling, and reliability engineering, supporting design and build activities on prototype builds in Berkeley, CA and production lines in Weirton, WV.
This is a leadership role: you'll build and mentor the team while staying hands-on in models and reviews. The role reports to the Senior Director of Hardware and Systems Engineering, and will be based at our Berkeley, CA office.
What you'll do:
  • Build, manage, and mentor a team of thermal/fluids and structural analysis engineers as a player-coach
  • Own structural, thermal, and fluid simulation (FEA/CFD) of Form's iron-air battery cell, module, and enclosure - from early architecture trade studies through production support
  • Establish Form's model validation and correlation practice, tying simulation to prototype and factory test data
  • Translate product requirements into analysis plans; use simulation results to drive design decisions early in the development cycle
  • Collaborate with battery, electrical, chemical, systems, and reliability engineers to optimize designs for performance, cost, and reliability
What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 12+ years of experience (advanced degrees count toward experience - many simulation leaders hold a PhD)
  • Deep expertise in either thermal/fluids simulation (CFD/conjugate heat transfer) or structural analysis (FEA, static/dynamic) - with working fluency across both
  • Hands-on mastery of commercial CAE tools (e.g., STAR-CCM+, Ansys Fluent/Mechanical/Icepak, Abaqus, COMSOL) and experience automating simulation workflows
  • 5+ years of experience managing, building, and leading simulation/analysis (CAE) teams; and mentoring engineers
  • Demonstrated model validation/correlation against physical test data
  • Strong technical communication across functions and with external partners
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mechanical design ownership of shipped hardware products, or experience in high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Experience with batteries, energy storage, power electronics cooling, or other high-power thermal management
  • Requirements definition and FMEA-driven development
  • DoE / optimization-driven design exploration
