Caterpillarβs BCP division is hiring a Performance/Simulation/Application Engineer supporting Roll Over and Falling Object Protective Structures (ROPS/FOPS) design, validation, and certification at the Clayton Machine Development Center (CMDC) in the Clayton, NC area. Previous experience with ROPS/FOPS would be beneficial; however, candidates with strong structural analysis and simulation backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as training and development will be provided to build the specialized ROPS/FOPS knowledge required for the role.
Role SummaryAs a Performance/Simulation/Application Engineer, you will be responsible for evaluating, developing, and validating ROPS and FOPS structures for heavy construction equipment. You will use advanced finite element analysis (FEA) methods to meet structural strength and stiffness, manufacturability, and cost targets. You will work closely with design, test, and analysis teams; support testing and process test data; and build, correlate, and utilize FEA models in support of new product development and field issue resolution. ROPS/FOPS experience would be an advantage, but it is not required. Candidates with a strong foundation in structural mechanics, finite element analysis, and engineering problem solving will be supported through training and mentorship to develop the specific ROPS/FOPS design, validation, and certification expertise needed for success in the role. To be successful, you will demonstrate a strong sense of urgency, a willingness to learn, and determination to resolve issues while maintaining high-quality standards.
What Youβll Do (Job Duties)- Build, run, and correlate finite element (FEA) models using Abaqus, NASTRAN, and LSDYNA for static, dynamic, and non-linear analyses solutions.
- Develop ROPS/FOPS structural solutions that meet strength, stiffness, manufacturing, and cost targets.
- Partner with design engineers and provide input to generate efficient and robust structural concepts and resolve complex technical issues.
- Support validation testing through gage mapping, test setup guidance, data analysis, and correlation of test results to simulation models.
- Continuously improve analysis quality and efficiency by collaborating with the simulation and analysis team and broader community.
- Clearly communicate analysis results and technical recommendations through written reports and verbal presentations.
- Engage other engineers and technical specialists as needed to address detailed technical challenges.
- Degree Requirement: Bachelorβs degree in engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace preferred).
- Experience Requirement: Demonstrated experience in building, developing and solving advanced FEA models involving nonlinear materials, large deformations, contact interactions and time-dependent loading. Experience in test planning and correlating analysis models with physical test data preferred.
- Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Ability to interpret and work from detailed engineering drawings and technical specifications with high accuracy and attention to detail to deliver high quality, compliant results.
- Technical Excellence: Brings good mechanical aptitude and a solid understanding of engineering principles to solve complex problems effectively. Demonstrates expertise in applying technical knowledge to ensure robust and reliable designs.

- Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.
- Experience in Abaqus and/or LS-Dyna.
- Experience with heavy equipment manufacturers.
- Progressive experience of general analysis and multiple commercial and nonlinear FEA tools (e.g. Creo Simulate, NASTRAN).
- Experience with nonlinear bolted joint analysis, weld/metal fatigue, dynamics, isolation systems, and digital signal processing is highly desired.
