What is a modeling and simulation job?

Modeling and simulation jobs involve creating digital or mathematical models to represent real-world systems, processes, or phenomena, and then using simulations to analyze their behavior under various scenarios. Professionals in this field use specialized software and computational techniques to predict outcomes, optimize designs, and inform decision-making in industries like engineering, defense, healthcare, and manufacturing. These roles often require strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming, and a background in mathematics or science. Modeling and simulation experts help organizations save time and resources by testing ideas virtually before applying them in real life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modeling and simulation specialist?

To thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in mathematics, and a background in computer science or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Expertise with simulation software (such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Arena), programming languages (like Python or C++), and knowledge of modeling standards is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate models, effective simulations, and actionable insights that drive decision-making in complex systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in modeling and simulation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Modeling and Simulation often encounter challenges such as integrating complex data from multiple sources, ensuring model accuracy, and communicating technical results to non-technical stakeholders. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with subject matter experts, ongoing model validation and verification, and using clear visualizations to explain insights. Building strong interdisciplinary communication skills and staying current with evolving simulation tools can also help professionals effectively navigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Modeling And Simulation vs Data Analyst?

Chief Engineer - Radar Division (M2S2 Program)

Parsons is in search of an amazingly talented Chief Engineer to join our team! The Chief Engineer will bring deep technical expertise in surface-based radar design combined with program management acumen to support the US Army's Multi-Mission Surveillance Systems (M2S2) product office. This individual will serve as a vital technical bridge between Parsons, the equipment manufacturer, and a cross-functional team of engineers, logisticians, and business management personnel - driving surface-based radar systems from proof of concept through full-scale deployment to the battlefield.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Serve as the senior technical authority for surface-based radar design, development, and integration efforts supporting the M2S2 product office.
  • Partner closely with the major OEM radar manufacturer to guide technology maturation from proof of concept through full-scale production and fielding.
  • Provide engineering leadership across radar subsystems, including counterfire target acquisition, air surveillance, air defense, fire control, and command and control systems.
  • Lead and contribute to technical evaluations of proposals, contract start meetings, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), and design reviews.
  • Support development of performance specifications and performance work statements (PWS) in coordination with government and industry stakeholders.
  • Conduct threat analysis and technology evaluation to inform system design decisions and program direction.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate technical and programmatic risks across the radar development lifecycle.
  • Oversee analog engineering, real-time embedded computing, and software engineering efforts supporting radar system design.
  • Apply modeling & simulation and statistical analysis methods to validate system performance and inform design trade-offs.
  • Participate in and support test documentation, test readiness reviews (TRRs), and test oversight activities.
  • Guide technology transition efforts, ensuring smooth handoff from development to operational deployment.
  • Represent technical program status and risks at program management meetings, briefing government and Parsons leadership as needed.
  • Ensure all engineering activities align with DoD acquisition processes, milestones, and regulatory requirements.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in radar engineering, systems engineering, or related defense technology development.
  • Demonstrated experience with surface-based radar design and a major OEM radar manufacturer.
  • Proven track record transitioning technology from proof of concept to full-scale deployment.
  • Strong background in one or more of the following: counterfire target acquisition, air surveillance, air defense, fire control, or command and control systems.
  • Experience with threat analysis, technology evaluation, and risk management within a defense acquisition environment.
