What is a modeling and simulation job?

Modeling and simulation jobs involve creating digital or mathematical models to represent real-world systems, processes, or phenomena, and then using simulations to analyze their behavior under various scenarios. Professionals in this field use specialized software and computational techniques to predict outcomes, optimize designs, and inform decision-making in industries like engineering, defense, healthcare, and manufacturing. These roles often require strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming, and a background in mathematics or science. Modeling and simulation experts help organizations save time and resources by testing ideas virtually before applying them in real life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modeling and simulation specialist?

To thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in mathematics, and a background in computer science or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Expertise with simulation software (such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Arena), programming languages (like Python or C++), and knowledge of modeling standards is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate models, effective simulations, and actionable insights that drive decision-making in complex systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in modeling and simulation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Modeling and Simulation often encounter challenges such as integrating complex data from multiple sources, ensuring model accuracy, and communicating technical results to non-technical stakeholders. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with subject matter experts, ongoing model validation and verification, and using clear visualizations to explain insights. Building strong interdisciplinary communication skills and staying current with evolving simulation tools can also help professionals effectively navigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Modeling And Simulation vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Job Title: Modeling and Simulation Engineer
Job Category: Science
Time Type: Full time
Minimum Clearance Required to Start: TS/SCI
Employee Type: Regular
Percentage of Travel Required: Up to 10%
Type of Travel: Continental US
* * *
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Modeling and Simulation (M&S) subject matter expert and small team leader to assist simulation development for the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC) through formulating, analyzing, executing, and delivering M&S studies to answer customer questions.
Most of these studies will be performed through AFSIM, while others could employ ITASE, ODESSA, Eco-System, or others.
You will take requests from external customers, join the government in the conversation while understanding what questions need to be asked to initially map and scope the project and chart a course towards answering the request. This will require breaking the given scenario into pieces by working backwards from the expected deliverable, map the project, and assign personnel around them to work different pieces in parallel, often taking on the toughest and most complex components themselves.
Documentation of this process is critical and should identify steps, assumptions, limitations, knowns, gaps, and issues.
You will be required to understand the kinds of models and systems NGIC addresses and collaborate with intelligence SMEs to understand the data and how it needs to be analyzed and presented to the customer.
Responsibilities:
  • Solid foundation and proficiency in the scientific method and developing a research plan that starts with an ill-defined question and ends with a published report that will stand up to peer review.
  • Conduct experiments to understand the behavior of the system (or SoS) and/or evaluate various strategies for the operation of the system.
  • Technical proficiency with appropriate M&S models (especially AFSIM), tools, and environments to provide an active role in the carrying out of simulations.
  • Use experimentation and testing as a strategic advantage-cutting test durations, revealing critical insights early and often, and turning raw data into insights
  • Examine cause and effect and verify controllable inputs and accurate, repeatable measurement systems.
  • Recognize how to format a problem or evaluation to take advantage of the DOE process and solution. Collaborate with the team to answer questions such as "What should we test and why?" or "How much testing is enough". Shorten testing durations of complex systems to enable analysts who need to understand key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Apply the scientific method to support analysis, including statistics and graphical analyses.
  • Write test plans and reports supported by scientific methods.
  • Examine cause and effect; verify controllable inputs and accurate, repeatable measurement systems

Qualifications:
  • Accredited degree in physics, engineering, computer science, applied math, or similar discipline with broad engineering and computer science knowledge. Master's degree or Ph.D. is highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience serving in a M&S role on DoD related programs and projects.
  • Experience with multiple M&S tool suites, with a very strong preference for AFSIM experience.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Active in scope DoD TS/SCI security clearance is a requirement
Nothing lower than a TS clearance will be considered.
  • Ability to conduct analysis and produce comprehensive technical assessments that include independent research and technical writing.
  • U.S. Military experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience working in or with the intelligence community is beneficial but not required.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently with minimal oversight while maintaining focus on objectives defined by the client.
