Job description
Are you passionate about improving Precision Strike capabilities for the United States warfighter?
Do you love solving complex problems with sophisticated modeling and simulation (M&S) tools?
Do you thrive in dynamic, collaborative, and fun work environments?
If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!
We are seeking a Lethality M&S Engineer to characterize and evaluate missile system end-game performance for Precision Strike platforms. We are a multi-disciplinary and hardworking team of analysts and developers who support a wide range of government sponsors with many exciting technical problems. As a member of our team, you will develop and use simulation tools to conduct physics-based engagement-level and mission-level analyses, while collaborating with specialists and integrating M&S tools in other fields including (but not limited to): aerodynamics, GNC, propulsion, radar engineering, electronic warfare, software development, systems engineering and more.
As a Lethality Modeling & Simulation Engineer...
- Your primary responsibility will be to evaluate precision strike platform effectiveness by developing, using, and integrating together an assortment of engagement-level lethality modeling and simulation tools.
- You will analyze the performance of current and future weapon systems, as well as helping optimize engagements the weapon system could perform.
- You will help build and develop novel engineering software tools to analyze large and complex data sets.
- Work with members of the Intelligence Community (IC) to help develop models of key targets and understand how best to defeat them.
- You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to use, develop, and improve detailed modeling capabilities.
- You will prepare and present formal documentation to technical specialists, operational partners, and Government sponsors.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical, Aerospace, or a closely related engineering field.
- Have at least two years of relevant experience analyzing missile systems or working with aerospace/defense systems.
- Have experience with programming languages such as MATLAB or Python.
- Have experience running or developing modeling and simulations tools.
- Have the ability to analyze complex technical problems, develop effective solutions, and execute tasks through completion.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level government security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have a Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical, Aerospace, or other Engineering field.
- Have detailed experience with warhead design, penetration mechanics, shock physics, weapon targeting, or other related fields.
- Have experience with M&S tools such as AFSIM, ESAMS, SHAZAM, AJEM, VITAL, etc. to analyze the effectiveness of fuzes and/or warheads.
- Have experience with hydrocode analysis tools such as ALE3D, Velodyne, CTH, LS-DYNA to conduct high-fidelity analysis of systems.
- Have strong programming skills with at least one of the following languages: Python, MATLAB / Simulink, C / C++.
- Have experience working with DoW Government customers, industry partners, or the Intelligence Community.
- Have an active Top Secret or higher level security clearance.
