Job description

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world's challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.
Our Structural Engineering practice collaborates with architects, building owners, and builders to design elegant solutions for projects of all types, sizes, and levels of complexity. From designing the world's tallest buildings and most extended spans to engineering inventive "jewel-box" structures and designing major expansion projects, we continually seek the best balance among the demands of form, function, sustainability, constructability, schedule, and budget.
The Role
We're seeking a BIM Modeler to support the design and documentation of complex projects using the latest modeling software. In this role, you'll be responsible for creating 3D parametric models, translating them into clear 2D drawings, and producing detailed construction documents. The ideal candidate is self-directed, technically skilled, and comfortable working across all phases of the building design process.
Responsibilities
  • Create 2D CAD/3D BIM models to a high level of accuracy.
  • Develop structural plans, sections, elevations and details from a 3D BIM model for projects of all sizes and technical complexities.
  • Convert initial concepts, sketches, or hand-drawn designs into accurate CAD representations.
  • Work closely with structural engineers and other team members to ensure accurate representation and implementation of designs.
  • Clearly annotate, dimension and detail production drawings in conformance to Thornton Tomasetti standards and practices.
  • Setup, manage, and/or plot large sheets sets including revisions and markups for each project.
  • Assist and direct CAD/BIM workflow.
  • Set up and geo-locate multiple models for a single project.
  • Interface with engineers, our clients, and other consultants through clear communication and drawings. Interact with our clients to coordinate BIM modeling content and approaches, model exchanges, quality control, and delivery.
  • Continued development of "best practices" for BIM.

Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Drafting & Design or equivalent experience focused in building construction.
  • Experience providing plan preparation and project deliverable drawings and files for building structures and foundations.
  • Significant design experience and understanding of AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Working knowledge of structural building components, structural construction materials (steel and concrete), standard construction techniques, and basic understanding of print reading and construction document production,
  • Excellent understanding of 3D parametric modeling to maximize the benefits of an integrated building model.
  • Excellent skills in relation to rendering and graphic formats and their manipulation and output.
  • Experience in Rhino, Grasshopper, TEKLA, and data exchanges between BIM platforms is preferred.

Compensation
The rate for this position generally is $1 - $400 hourly. This range is a good faith estimate provided pursuant to the Illinois State Pay Transparency Law. It is based on what a successful Illinois State applicant might be paid and assumes that the successful candidate will be in Illinois State or perform the position from Illinois State. Similar positions located outside of Illinois State will not necessarily receive the same compensation. Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted by Illinois Equal Pay Transparency Law. Compensation offers will be based on various factors, including operational needs, individual education, qualifications and experience, work location and comparison to employee already in the role, as well as other considerations permitted by law. A potential new employee's pay history will not be used in compensation decisions.
Benefits
Depending on your employment status, benefits may include:
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, Disability and other voluntary benefits
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for Medical and Childcare
  • Paid Time Off, Family Leave for New Parents, Volunteer Time
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Commuter Transit (where available)
  • 401k retirement savings with Company matching on employee contributions and/or qualified student loan repayments
  • Fitness Reimbursement
  • And other various wellness, diversity/inclusion and employee resource programs and initiatives

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
