What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

Job description

STR is hiring a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE)ย to work across a broad portfolio of DoD mission areas. The Systems Engineer should have experience architecting systems, working across the Systems Engineering Lifecycle, a deep understanding of Systems Engineering principles, reverse engineering techniques, and the ability to work with complex software systems and the utilization of Digital Engineering/MBSE to accomplish program goals. The candidate will support STR's Systems Development Division to achieve architectural integrity and traceability from requirements analysis through system and software development and production system deployment.

This position offers the opportunity to work with leading domain experts developing solutions to solve the most challenging national security problems. Our teams consist of motivated individuals with degrees in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and data science. The ideal candidate will be experienced in Systems Engineering processes and techniques, Modeling and Simulation, software-based systems, Digital Engineering/MBSE and be excited about opportunities to grow and be a source of subject matter expertise across the organization.

The Systems Engineer should have experience implementing a rigorous MBSE approach to develop DoD systems. New programs at STR will be looking to adopt agile approaches that incorporate model-based requirements management and traceability with software development. This position is well suited for a Systems Engineer with a software systems background who is interested in improving the state of the practice and demonstrating the advantages that MBSE can offer.

What you will do:

  • Utilize your Systems Engineering skillset as part of a tightly knit team to design, develop, implement, and deploy advanced software systems
  • Analyze, reverse-engineer, derive, and define requirements from ambiguous or incomplete software system implementations and codebases
  • Develop/generate documentation (e.g. Systems Requirements Document, SysML models) to capture requirements of new and existing systems
  • Perform gap analysis between derived requirements and current system capabilities to identify missing features or functionalities
  • Assist other technical contributors throughout the software lifecycle, from early prototypes to fully integrated systems
  • Implement MBSE approaches using SysML in Cameo
  • Work closely with domain experts and software development teams to realize program designs for a diverse set of applications, including:
    • Distributed mission planning
    • Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) management
    • Decision making support to human analysts/planners
  • This position is based in one of our offices but will take advantage of STR's flexible, hybrid environment: we anticipate that you could work remotely as much as 25% of the time
  • Any time work does not require use of STR's facilities, you are welcome to work remotely

Who you are:

  • This position requires an Active DoD Top Secret Clearance with SCI eligibility, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government
  • BS, MS or PhD in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience implementing open architectures and integrating with large scale software-intensive systems and platform systems
  • Strong ability to derive requirements from existing software and capture new customer requirements, and translate those into development tasks for software teams
  • Comfortable working in dynamic environments and adjusting to changing priorities
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience as a Systems Engineer or related field
  • Experience architecting systems using system modeling tools (SysML in Cameo)

Even Better:

  • Domain expertise or familiarity with one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Sea, air, and space platforms, mission planning, and C2 systems
    • Sensor Resource Management
    • Electronic Warfare
    • Software deployment in cloud-based systems
    • Government Open System Architectures (UCI, OMS, COARPS)
  • 5+ years of experience in architecting systems using system modeling tools (SysML in Cameo)
  • Experience porting models/designs from SparxEA to Cameo
  • Experience in Java, Python, or object-oriented programming languages
  • Agile software development experience and/or certification
