Job description

Job title: Tool and Die Maker 

Reports to: Foreman 

Supervisory responsibilities: Apprentices 

Summary/objective: Advanced Tooling Systems (ATS) is seeking a Tool and Die Maker to join their night shift team! The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for coordinating with all departments required to produce a die to the specifications/designs provided in a manner consistent with their training - this includes tasks such as: analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, setting up and operating machine tools, and fitting and assembling parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools by performing the following Essential Functions. 

Essential functions:  

  • Follow the die from cradle to customer. Die maker is responsible for every aspect of the tool. 

  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary. 

  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together. 

  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools. 

  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates. 

  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes. 

  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies. 

  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators. 

  • Lead die construction and try out. 

  • Follow all safety rules and report unsafe work conditions to management. 

  • Keep work area clean. 

  • Maintain appropriate tools and keep current on tool calibration.  

Required competency, education, and experience:  

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Tool and Die Maker 

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent 

  • Diemaker Journeyman Status or Equivalent 

  • Valid driver’s license. 

Work environment: Manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

Physical demands:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.  

  • The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands grip or handle; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.  

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. 

Position type and expected hours of work: Full time, Night Shift. Schedule may vary based on shift. Monday thru Friday 4:15 pm - 2:45 am.

Travel: <5%
