What is a model based control system engineer?

Model Based Control System Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement control systems using mathematical models of physical systems. They use tools like MATLAB/Simulink to simulate and validate system performance before deploying to hardware, which helps improve efficiency and reduce errors. These engineers work across industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, ensuring that complex systems behave as intended. Their responsibilities often include system modeling, controller design, software coding, and system integration. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is also a key part of their role.

How does a model based control system engineer typically collaborate with software and hardware teams during a project?

Model Based Control System Engineers work closely with both software and hardware teams to ensure seamless integration of their control algorithms into final products. They often develop and simulate control models using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, which are then handed off to software engineers for code implementation and to hardware engineers for system validation. Regular meetings and collaborative design reviews are common, allowing for early identification of integration issues and alignment on system requirements. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for delivering robust and efficient control systems in industries such as automotive or aerospace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based control system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Based Control System Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, mathematics, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with technical tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, embedded systems, and systems modeling software—as well as certifications in control systems—are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure the accurate design, analysis, and implementation of control systems vital for the performance and safety of complex engineering projects.

Job description

Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) / Digital Engineer with Cameo and/or MBSE software modeling experience to join our team working on-site in classified spaces. The primary worksite is in the Alexandria, VA area in support of the Office of the Undersecretary of War for Research and Engineering (OUSW(R&E)) Mission Integration.
In this role, you will research and develop descriptive architecture models of complex kill chains, kill webs, and effects-based solutions that reflect military employment. The models you will design enable gap analysis and highlight new technology applications, in addition to capturing key study details and informing additional analysis efforts. The architectures center on systems-of-systems modeling, spanning from the tactical to strategic levels. You will be working at the forefront of the Mission Engineering community informing modeling styles and standards, innovating usage, and driving digital engineering for systems-of-systems mission applications . You will utilize MBSE software tools (e.g., Cameo) to develop descriptive models, conduct analysis and produce deliverables that inform solutions to key operational challenges faced by our nation's warfighters, enabling mission success. This position requires collaborative teaming and offers an excellent opportunity for a modeler to work in an innovative environment at the leading edge of delivering emerging technologies and future concepts for complex warfighting scenarios.
Responsibilities:
As a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) / Digital Engineer with MTSI, you will work as an integral member of a government/contractor team in support of our customer's organization from conceptual design and analysis to integration and testing. The team constructs, manages, and conducts discrete mission engineering and analysis study tasks to evaluate the efficacy of legacy architectures and new technologies and capabilities applied in new mission concepts of employment to meet evolving Joint mission objectives. This position will be 100% onsite in the Alexandria, Virginia area, with the possibility of local travel to customer sites and related engineering conferences/workshops.
Your essential job functions will include, but may not be limited to:
• esearch and model innovative descriptive architecture models of complex kill-chains/webs and effects-based solutions.
• Research MBSE styles and frameworks for mission engineering, contributing to developing, updating, and maintaining an architecture style guide intended to lead the broader community to standardized practices.
• Conduct in-depth analysis/evaluation of complex kill-webs to identify capability gaps, recommend potential solutions, and assess how emerging technologies influence overall kill-web effectiveness.
• Develop architectures to support the systems engineering lifecycle review of requirements, concept testing, documentation, and technology transition based on mission impacts.
• I nform selection of preferred design solutions and course of action alternatives in project development/product delivery.
• Provide review and analysis support to adjacent organizations conducting experimentation and testing.
• Brief model-based systems engineering (MBSE) architectures and related analysis outputs to OUSW(R&E) Senior Leaders, DoW Senior Leaders, and external stakeholders.
