What is mobile testing?

Mobile testing is the process of testing applications developed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It involves verifying the functionality, usability, performance, and security of mobile apps across different devices, operating systems, and network conditions. The goal is to ensure that the app works as intended for all users, regardless of the device or platform they use. Mobile testing can include both manual and automated testing approaches to identify and fix issues before the app is released.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in mobile testing, and how can they be addressed?

Mobile testing professionals often encounter challenges such as device fragmentation, varying operating system versions, and rapidly changing app requirements. Addressing these issues involves maintaining a diverse device lab or using cloud-based testing platforms to ensure coverage across different devices and OS versions. Additionally, close collaboration with developers and product teams helps testers stay up-to-date on new features and bug fixes, allowing for more efficient and thorough testing cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile testing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Testing professional, you need strong knowledge of software testing methodologies, mobile platforms (iOS/Android), and experience with test case design and execution. Familiarity with automated testing tools like Appium, Selenium, or Espresso, as well as understanding of CI/CD systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable mobile applications that meet user expectations and business requirements.

What is the difference between Mobile Testing vs Software Testing?

AspectMobile TestingSoftware Testing
FocusTesting mobile applications on various devices and platformsTesting software applications across different environments, including desktop and web
ToolsAppium, Espresso, XCUITestSelenium, JUnit, TestNG
Work EnvironmentMobile devices, emulators, cloud testing platformsDesktops, servers, cloud environments
CertificationsISTQB Mobile Testing, Certified Mobile App TesterISTQB Foundation, Certified Software Tester

Mobile Testing and Software Testing share overlapping skills, such as understanding testing methodologies and tools. However, Mobile Testing specializes in testing mobile apps on various devices and platforms, requiring knowledge of mobile-specific tools and environments. Software Testing covers a broader range of applications, including desktop and web, with a focus on different testing tools and environments. Both roles are essential in ensuring application quality, but Mobile Testing is more specialized for mobile app performance and compatibility.

How do you become a mobile testing professional?

To become a mobile testing professional, you typically need a background in software testing or quality assurance, with knowledge of mobile platforms like iOS and Android. Skills in testing tools, scripting, and understanding app development processes are important, and certifications such as ISTQB can enhance your qualifications.

How to become a mobile tester?

To become a mobile tester, gain knowledge of mobile platforms and testing tools such as Appium or Selenium, and develop skills in manual and automated testing. A background in software testing, programming, or quality assurance is often helpful, and certifications like ISTQB can enhance credibility. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level roles can also improve job prospects.

Is mobile testing in demand?

Mobile testing is in high demand due to the widespread use of smartphones and mobile applications. Companies seek skilled testers to ensure app quality across various devices and operating systems, making mobile testing a valuable specialization in the software testing industry.

Job description

ABOUT LVT

LVT is redefining how businesses operate in the physical world, moving beyond traditional security solutions to deliver AI-driven, actionable intelligence that makes sites smarter, safer, and more secure. Since pioneering our first mobile, solar-powered units, our commitment to scrappy, hands-on innovation has made us an established leader and one of the fastest-growing companies in intelligent site technology. We are building the next generation of solutions—from our physical units in the field to a powerful Agentic AI platform—that allows our customers to gain unprecedented visibility and control over safety, compliance, and operations. This is your chance to join a cutting-edge team that isn't just watching the world change, but actively building the technology that is changing it.

We're a team that's focused on growth and innovation, and we're proud that our crew, products, and leadership are being recognized for it.

  • A Top-Tier Growth Company: Named one of the Financial Times' Fastest Growing Companies 2025 and #10 on the Inc. 5000 Rocky Mountain Regional list for 2025.
  • Innovative Leadership: Our CEO, Ryan Porter, was named an EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2025, and our CTO, Steve Lindsey, was inducted into the Silicon Slopes CTO Hall of Fame in 2024.
  • Product & Software Excellence: We were named one of The Software Report's Top 100 Software Companies of 2023 and are a winner of the Security Today Govies Award for 2025.
ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Senior SDET II, you will be a critical technical leader within our Software Quality team, directly impacting the performance, scalability, and reliability of LVT's core software products. You will partner closely with engineering and product management to champion a shift-left quality philosophy, designing high-velocity automated testing frameworks that keep pace with our rapid deployment cycles. This role combines advanced software architecture with engineering strategy, allowing you to elevate our continuous integration ecosystem and eliminate systemic bottlenecks across our microservices.

This role is based out of our Headquarters in American Fork, Utah, with a primary focus on driving collaboration and engineering excellence on-site.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Architect, scale, and maintain highly reusable, distributed test automation frameworks for Web, Mobile, and API layers to reduce release cycle times.

  • Design and optimize continuous testing pipelines within CI/CD workflows (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), ensuring rapid, reliable feedback loops for development teams.

  • Lead performance, scalability, security, and chaos engineering testing efforts to guarantee the long-term resilience of LVT's platforms under heavy load.

  • Partner with Product Managers and Software Engineers during early design phases to champion testability, define clear quality metrics, and mitigate risks early.

  • Conduct rigorous code reviews for test automation scripts, enforcing high standards of maintainability, clean code patterns, and modern design principles.

  • Diagnose complex, intermittent system failures across microservices architectures and build comprehensive observability dashboards to track platform health.

  • Evaluate and introduce cutting-edge testing tooling, strategies, and AI-driven or self-healing testing practices to maximize overall engineering efficiency.

  • Mentor and coach Mid-level and Senior SDET I engineers, fostering a strong culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Seasoned Quality Engineer: 8+ years of deep software engineering experience with a dedicated, proven focus on automated testing, quality infrastructure, and systems thinking.

  • Technical Leader: Track record of operating at a Senior or Lead level, successfully driving cross-functional quality initiatives across multiple autonomous development teams.

  • Advanced Programmer: Mastery of modern programming languages—specifically Python or TypeScript/JavaScript—utilizing advanced OOP concepts, data structures, and clean coding practices.

  • Automation Framework Expert: Expertise across industry-standard automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, RestAssured) with the ability to build from scratch.

  • Cloud & DevOps Infrastructure Fluency: Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and modern infrastructure-as-code practices.

  • Distributed Systems Native: Strong proficiency in SQL/NoSQL databases, microservices testing paradigms, and debugging across complex, interdependent backend architectures.

  • Problem Solver: A relentless drive to root out flaky tests, optimize automated test execution times, and solve deep, systemic technical bottlenecks.

  • Influencer Without Authority: Exceptional communication and partnership skills, with a proven ability to align developers, product owners, and executives toward a quality-first engineering culture.
