Job description

Taxwell helps everyday Americans get every tax advantage they deserve by finding credits and deductions they never even knew existed. Our tax preparation software offers easy guidance and ensures your maximum tax refund. We strive to build a team of like-minded experts in both tax and technology who align with our brand purpose, are advocates for our customers and have a fresh, non-traditional approach to the tax industry.
We are seeking a Principal Mobile Engineer to own the TaxAct mobile experience across iOS and Android. This is a high-impact individual contributor role responsible for architecture, delivery, and long-term evolution of the mobile platform, including authentication, biometrics, secure storage, notifications, deep linking, performance, device integrations, and app store distribution.
While much of the TaxAct experience is delivered through web technologies, the mobile application remains a critical customer touchpoint. You will serve as the primary technical owner for mobile strategy and execution, partnering closely with engineering, product, design, security, and platform teams. This is a hands-on role requiring regular production coding, technical leadership, and strong engineering judgment.
We expect Principal Engineers to leverage AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve speed, quality, and effectiveness while maintaining high standards for security, reliability, and maintainability.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Mobile Platform Ownership
• Own the architecture, design, delivery, and evolution of the TaxAct mobile application across iOS and Android.
• Lead mobile capabilities including authentication, biometrics, secure storage, notifications, deep linking, device integrations, performance, and app store operations.
• Define the appropriate balance between native mobile and web-based experiences.
• Drive platform quality, reliability, security, and maintainability.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and modernize the mobile platform where appropriate.
Engineering Leadership
• Act as the technical lead for mobile initiatives across engineering, product, design, security, and platform teams.
• Operate independently to identify opportunities, define solutions, and drive execution.
• Build prototypes, evaluate technologies, and solve complex technical problems.
• Advise stakeholders on mobile architecture, platform capabilities, user experience, release strategy, and operational excellence.
• Improve mobile engineering practices, tooling, standards, and documentation.
AI-Augmented Engineering
• Use AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows to accelerate design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and research.
• Maintain accountability for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Evaluate emerging AI-powered engineering tools and help establish adoption standards.
• Review and validate AI-generated work to ensure production-quality outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience building, shipping, and operating production mobile applications.
• Proven ownership of complex mobile applications or platform capabilities across iOS and Android.
• Experience driving initiatives from concept through production with minimal direction.
• Experience supporting the full mobile lifecycle, including releases, observability, crash analysis, performance optimization, and platform upgrades.
• Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering effectiveness.
• Experience modernizing applications while maintaining production stability.
Technical Expertise
• Significant production experience with Flutter and Dart.
• Strong understanding of iOS and Android platform capabilities, including authentication, biometrics, secure storage, notifications, deep linking, permissions, and device APIs.
• Experience integrating mobile applications with web applications, WebViews, APIs, backend services, identity providers, and third-party platforms.
• Strong hands-on coding ability and mobile architecture expertise.
• Experience reviewing and validating AI-generated code and technical solutions.
• Ability to make pragmatic decisions balancing customer experience, velocity, risk, and maintainability.
Mindset & Communication
• Ownership mindset with a focus on outcomes.
• Ability to operate independently and navigate ambiguity.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Pragmatic, customer-focused technical judgment.
• Leadership through expertise, influence, accountability, and delivery.
Bonus Points
• Experience with WebView-based mobile applications.
• Experience with authentication, identity, biometrics, and secure session management.
• Experience in regulated industries such as tax, fintech, healthcare, or financial services.
• Experience with analytics, experimentation, observability, crash reporting, and performance monitoring.
• Experience building reusable mobile tooling or platform capabilities.
