What is a mobile engineer?

Mobile Engineers are software developers who specialize in designing, building, and maintaining applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. They typically work with platforms like iOS and Android, using languages such as Swift, Kotlin, or Java. Mobile Engineers are responsible for ensuring that apps are user-friendly, secure, and perform smoothly across various devices. Their work often includes collaborating with designers, backend developers, and QA teams to deliver high-quality mobile experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Swift, Kotlin, or Java, along with experience in mobile app development frameworks and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Xcode, Android Studio, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications in mobile development can be advantageous. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and ensuring user satisfaction. These competencies are critical for building robust, user-friendly mobile applications that meet business and user needs in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

What are some common challenges mobile engineers face when working on cross-platform applications?

Mobile Engineers working on cross-platform applications often encounter challenges related to maintaining consistent user experiences across different devices and operating systems. Ensuring compatibility with varying hardware specifications, screen sizes, and OS versions can be complex and time-consuming. Additionally, integrating platform-specific features and optimizing performance without sacrificing code maintainability requires careful planning and collaboration with designers and backend teams. Staying updated with the latest frameworks and best practices also plays a crucial role in overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Mobile Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectMobile EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related, knowledge of mobile platformsBachelor's in Computer Science or related, programming skills
Work EnvironmentDeveloping apps for iOS/Android, working in mobile-focused teamsBuilding software across various platforms, including web and desktop
Industry UsageTech companies, app development firms, startupsBroadly used across all software development sectors
Search/Comparison IntentUnderstanding mobile-specific roles vs general software roles

Mobile Engineers specialize in creating applications for mobile devices, focusing on iOS and Android platforms. Job description

Mark43's mission is to empower communities and their governments with new technologies that improve the safety and quality of life for all. We build powerful, scalable, and elegant software that sets a new standard for the tools upon which our first responders rely. Our users are diverse, and we are committed to embracing diversity of thought and experience within our team.

We're looking for a Lead iOS Engineer to define the future of mobile engineering at Mark43. You'll lead the technical direction of our iOS platform, mentor engineers, and partner closely with Android teammates to evolve our cross-platform strategy using Swift and Kotlin. As we continue investing in Kotlin Multiplatform, you'll help determine where shared code accelerates development while ensuring our iOS applications deliver a best-in-class native experience.

As a technical leader, you'll own major architectural decisions, drive engineering best practices, and help deliver mission-critical software that first responders rely on every day. This is an opportunity to shape not only the products we build, but also the future of mobile development at Mark43. This role will be based in Boston, MA and operates on a 3 day hybrid schedule.

What You'll Do

If you were part of our team, here are some things you would have done last week:

  • Led the design and implementation of new features for our mobile-first public safety platform using Swift and modern iOS frameworks.
  • Partnered with Android engineers to identify opportunities for shared business logic using Kotlin Multiplatform while preserving a best-in-class native iOS experience.
  • Defined the technical roadmap for our iOS platform, balancing long-term architecture with rapid customer delivery.
  • Collaborated closely with Product, Design, and Engineering to develop solutions that meet customer needs while maintaining a high bar for quality and performance.
  • Reviewed pull requests, mentored engineers, and helped establish engineering best practices around architecture, testing, and maintainability.
  • Improved CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release processes to ensure reliable App Store deployments.
  • Investigated production issues, reduced technical debt, and drove architectural improvements that make the platform easier to build and maintain over time.
You should have:
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience developing native iOS applications with Swift.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead or senior engineer, driving architecture, mentoring teammates, and leading complex technical initiatives.
  • Deep expertise in modern iOS development, including Swift, Swift Concurrency, UIKit and/or SwiftUI, and Apple's current development best practices.
  • Strong experience with Kotlin and an understanding of cross-platform mobile architectures.
  • Experience shipping multiple production mobile applications from concept through App Store release.
  • Experience designing scalable application architecture and writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Strong understanding of mobile testing strategies, CI/CD pipelines, and App Store release processes.
  • Experience integrating RESTful APIs and working with cloud-based backend services.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across Engineering, Product, and Design.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) and/or Compose Multiplatform (CMP).
  • Experience helping define or implement a shared mobile platform strategy across iOS and Android.
  • Familiarity with modern Android development practices.
  • Experience building software for highly regulated or mission-critical environments.
People who thrive on our team also tend to share the following characteristics:
  • Humble, open, and curious, always looking to learn from teammates and improve the way we build software.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of challenging technical problems while helping others succeed.
  • Passionate about building thoughtful, reliable software that users depend on in high-pressure situations.
  • Willing to empathize with users whose experiences may be very different from your own.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
