Job description

As the RMAC Applications Lead, you will lead the primary engineering team at the Robotic Mobile Application Center (RMAC), responsible for leading the team that drives the transition of the Atlas humanoid robot into production-level automotive manufacturing.

This is a high-impact leadership role that combines the strategic responsibilities of a Fleet Operations Robot Captain with the technical oversight of data collection curriculum design and site integration. You will manage a team of Applications Engineers to ensure the RMAC fleet remains "mission-ready" while architecting the playbooks that define how Atlas learns complex sequencing and assembly tasks.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership & Strategic Coordination

  • Manage and mentor a team of Applications/Integration Engineers to ensure day-to-day operations align with Boston Dynamics' product strategy and automotive industry requirements.

  • Act as the primary technical bridge between the Atlas Engineering and Product teams and local Operations/Hardware SMEs.

  • Collaborate directly with the Atlas product and behavior teams to implement best practices and provide critical field feedback on system performance and usability.

  • Coordinate with HMGMA and Glovis stakeholders on data and workflow integration of Atlas products

2. Data Architecture & Curriculum Design

  • Lead the process development for consistent collection of high quality data and creation of test scenarios executed by the onsite robot operations team.

  • Own the creation of detailed playbooks for data collection, ensuring that all generated data meets QA standards for the 10,000-hour collection goal.

  • Define success criteria and oversee the execution of Operational Level Testing (OLT) and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for behavior policies.

  • Playbook Development: Ensure that playbook creation process and content maintains alignment across Atlas operations within BD and at partner sites

  • Pilot Coaching & Evaluation: Provide expert feedback and coaching to Robot Pilots on best techniques; partner with the annotation team to identify and correct poor piloting trends.

3. Fleet Mission Control (Robot Captain)

  • Serve as the mission lead for robot health, uptime, and hardware utilization across the RMAC fleet.

  • Oversee high-level technical triage, localizing complex system failures across hardware and software boundaries to determine escalation paths.

  • Prioritize the daily experiment queue to maximize hardware throughput and balance progress with operational risk.

  • Coordinate with onsite HW support and Waltham-based engineering to resolve systemic field issues and track fleet reliability metrics (MTBF, MTBR).

4. Site Integration & Deployment

  • Develop the processes and practices required to integrate Atlas into active automotive manufacturing environments.

  • Oversee site-level solution architecture, including the management of secure network infrastructure for robust system connectivity.

  • Facilitate pilot execution in HMGMA facilities once applications have successfully passed OLT.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience: 5-7+ years of professional experience in robotics operations, systems engineering, or field application engineering, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Deep understanding of robotics systems, including software stacks, controls, and electromechanical hardware interfaces.

    • Expertise in Linux (Ubuntu), networking telemetry, and reading/interpreting Real-Time (RT) code.

    • Proficiency in Python, C++, or scripting for automating workflows and troubleshooting.

    • Mastery of JIRA for issue tracking and Tableau for data-driven monitoring.

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to translate high-level R&D concepts into actionable information for executive stakeholders and daily operators.

Travel & Availability
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically to other potential Atlas deployment sites or to Boston Dynamics HQ

  • Ability to support a multi-shift operation (6am-2pm and 2pm-10pm) as needed to ensure fleet continuity.

The pay range for this position is between $177,207.64 to $221,509.55 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401(k), paid time off and an annual bonus structure. Additional details regarding these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer for employment.
