Job Summary

Minnesota Lawyers Mutual (MLM) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Claims Attorney to join our team. As part of the dynamic and customer service-oriented Claims Team, an MLM Claim Attorney handles Lawyers Professional Liability claims of moderate to high complexity. The ideal candidate will have experience investigating and analyzing professional liability claims, reviewing and evaluating legal exposure, managing outside counsel and driving case resolutions. The Claim Attorney should have experience analyzing insurance coverage, determining liability exposure and making appropriate reserve recommendations. The Claim Attorney will ensure that claims are handled within company policies and procedures within the individualโ€™s designated authority.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service to policyholders while investigating and analyzing coverage, liability and damages presented by claims
  • Draft claims correspondence to policyholders that incorporate state specific requirements
  • Evaluate, negotiate and resolve claims within designated authority, or seeks authority for those claims in excess of authority
  • Assign, retain and monitor outside defense attorneys to drive excellent case outcomes
  • Maintain claim files in a timely, organized matter
  • Negotiate settlements as well as travel to and attend mediations
  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Claim attorney may be asked to take the insurance adjuster examinations
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree and Juris Doctorate degree
  • Five or more years of professional liability claims handling and/or litigation experience
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law
  • Strong communication, writing and analytical skills with the ability to clearly articulate coverage determinations
  • Knowledge of insurance policies, procedures and regulations
  • Advanced negotiation and mediation skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and part of a team
