What is an MIT research scientist?

MIT Research Scientists are professionals who conduct advanced research in various scientific and engineering disciplines at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They typically hold a PhD or equivalent experience and contribute to ongoing projects, publish findings, and may supervise students or technical staff. Their work often involves collaboration with other researchers, securing funding, and advancing knowledge in their field. Research Scientists at MIT are critical to the institute's mission of innovation, discovery, and education.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an MIT research scientist?

To thrive as an MIT Research Scientist, you generally need a PhD in a relevant field, strong analytical and research skills, and a proven publication record. Proficiency with specialized laboratory equipment, programming languages (such as Python or MATLAB), and data analysis software is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaborative teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. Job description

About Counsel
Counsel's mission is to multiply the world's healthcare capacity. We believe in a future in which every person has a personalized, AI-enabled doctor always in their pocket. To accomplish this, we're building the first fully-vertical, AI-native medical group from the ground up. We've redesigned the entire clinical stack with custom AI tools that make our in-house physicians 10x faster and smarter. [learn more on our blog]
Since our founding in 2023, we have formed partnerships with leading healthcare organizations and are on track to serve hundreds of thousands of patients on our platform within the next year. We have raised over $35M from a16z, Google Ventures, Pear VC and other top-tier VC firms.
Our team combines deep expertise in medicine (Harvard, Mt. Sinai, Mass General, UCSF) and technology (MIT, Google, DeepMind, NVIDIA, Stripe, Meta) - and we're looking for exceptional people to join us as we scale.
Join us as we build the future of AI in healthcare!
About The Role
We are seeking a talented, driven, and experienced Research Scientist to join us in defining the future of AI + human healthcare. As a Research Scientist at Counsel Health, you will bridge the gap between fundamental research and product innovation. You will set up large-scale tests, deploy promising ideas quickly, and apply the latest theories to develop new and improved health-focused AI products.
From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, you will work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science-including machine learning, natural language processing, and agentic systems-while collaborating closely with our clinical and engineering teams.
What You'll Do
  • Model Evaluation: Evaluate AI models on relevant clinical tasks using both automated benchmarks and human-based assessments to ensure safety and efficacy.
  • Drive Research Impact: Write research papers to share findings and demonstrate impact across the team and the broader research community.
  • Build Health-AI Models: Build end-to-end health-focused AI models, including pre-training and post-training workflows, specifically tailored for clinical environments.
  • Create Novel Agentic Systems: Build agentic systems for both our patients and physicians. For example, you might build a system that pre-drafts prescriptions for the physician based on a user's presenting complaint, their past medical history and the suspected diagnosis.
  • Prototype & Simulate: Develop prototypes or run simulations to assess research impact, finalize hypotheses, and refine methodologies.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Help grow the research culture across teams by sharing research trends and practices within the community.

Who You Are
  • Advanced Degree: PhD degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Technical Expertise: Experience in coding with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or R.
  • AI/ML Specialization: Experience in agentic generative AI systems, Large Language Models (LLMs), and evaluation methodologies.
  • Track Record: Publications in top-tier AI/ML conferences or journals, such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or CVPR.

What You'll Bring
  • You have 5+ years of coding experience in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or R.
  • You have 2+ year of experience owning and initiating research agendas.
  • You have prior experience in healthcare research or working with clinical data.
  • You are familiar with Healthcare Data formats, including FHIR and OMOP.
  • You thrive on working alongside exceptional teammates and derive energy from collaborative environments.
  • You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where you can flex into both research and practical implementation.

Role Location
NYC - hybrid, Boston - hybrid, or Ireland - remote
What We Offer
  • Impact: Be at the forefront and contribute to groundbreaking, AI-driven healthcare experiences, directly interface with execs at the world's leading tech & healthcare orgs
  • Growth: Significant opportunities for broad ownership and professional development within our rapidly scaling startup
  • Compensation: Competitive salary + equity
  • Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare, vision + dental, 401K, Unlimited PTO, Parental Leave

Our Values
  • Patients come first.
We are clinicians 1st, technologists 2nd. We act with patient trust/safety at the center of every decision.
  • Innovate with optimism.
We are optimistic as we build the future of care delivery from first principles. Challenge the status quo when needed, no sacred cows.
  • Right answer wins.
Debate openly and pick the strongest path. We optimize for the company, not functions. We win and lose as a team.
  • Simplicity over complexity.
We choose clear, elegant solutions and avoid adding complexity that does not serve patients or the team.
  • Do fewer things, well.
We focus, and hold ourselves to the highest bar and pursue excellence in those areas.
