The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah seeks an innovative, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as Division Administrator for the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. This nationally recognized program provides comprehensive kidney and hypertension care across the Intermountain West, supports a robust research enterprise, and trains the next generation of nephrologists through its fellowship programs. The Division Administrator will partner closely with faculty, division and departmental leadership to provide strategic, operational, and financial oversight, advancing excellence across the division's clinical, research, and educational missions.
Reporting to the Division Chief and with functional oversight from the Department's Senior Administrative Director, this highly visible leadership role will drive strategic planning, financial stewardship, operational excellence, faculty support, and organizational effectiveness across a diverse workforce of faculty, advanced practice clinicians (APCs), trainees, and staff.

About the Division
The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension is a leading academic medicine division within the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, recognized for excellence in patient care, research, and medical education. Comprised of 45 faculty members, 16 advanced practice clinicians (APCs), 4 trainees, and 45 staff, the division provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease and hypertension, including kidney transplantation and dialysis services, across the Intermountain West. The division also supports a robust research enterprise and highly regarded fellowship training programs, advancing innovation and developing the next generation of nephrology leaders. Through its commitment to collaboration, discovery, and clinical excellence, the division plays a vital role in advancing the Department of Internal Medicine's clinical, research, and educational missions.
Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with faculty, physicians, departmental and division leadership, hospital leadership, and key institutional stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership in partnership with the Division Chief to advance the division's clinical, research, and educational missions.
  • Lead and implement strategic initiatives that promote growth, operational excellence, innovation, and financial sustainability.
  • Represent the division on departmental, institutional, and health system committees and workgroups.
  • Partner with faculty and administrative leaders to support academic program development, research growth, and clinical expansion.
  • Lead organizational change initiatives, workforce planning efforts, and administrative restructuring to optimize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement sustainable administrative structures, processes, and resources to support the division's continued growth and success.

Financial Management
  • Develop and manage short- and long-term budgets across the division's clinical, research, and educational missions.
  • Conduct complex financial analyses and forecasting to support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and resource utilization.
  • Ensure compliance with university, health system, sponsor, and regulatory financial policies and requirements.
  • Present financial performance, budget, and forecast reports to divisional and departmental leadership.

Clinical Operations & Program Oversight
  • Provide administrative oversight for clinical programs across nephrology, hypertension, kidney transplantation, and dialysis services.
  • Partner with clinical leaders to support high-quality, patient-centered care and improve access to services across the region.
  • Utilize performance analytics and operational metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support the growth and optimization of ambulatory, inpatient, transplant, and dialysis programs while ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.

Research Administration
  • Partner with faculty, research administration, and grant management professionals to support sponsored research activities and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee research-related administrative processes, including effort allocation, budgeting, and resource planning.
  • Support research growth and foster collaboration across the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Utah Health, and external partners.

Educational Support
  • Support the division's educational mission, including fellowship and trainee programs.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME, GME, and institutional requirements.
  • Partner with faculty and program leadership to support trainee success and educational excellence.
  • Provide administrative oversight and strategic support for educational initiatives and program growth.

Human Resources & Organizational Development
  • Lead and develop a team of administrative professionals, including executive and administrative assistants, financial and operational staff, and other support personnel.
  • Partner with division leadership on faculty and staff recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession planning.
  • Provide leadership, performance management, coaching, and professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Develop scalable workforce strategies to support a growing and evolving academic medicine enterprise.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.

Policy & Compliance
  • Develop, monitor, and interpret policies and procedures to ensure regulatory and institutional compliance.
  • Monitor adherence to federal, state, sponsor, university, and health system requirements.
  • Partner with leadership to identify and mitigate organizational risk while maintaining operational integrity.

Patient Experience
  • Analyze patient feedback and operational data to identify opportunities for service improvement.
  • Partner with faculty, clinicians, and staff to enhance patient access, satisfaction, and quality outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of excellence in patient-centered care across all clinical programs.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.
