Multnomah County's Public Health Division is a vital resource for residents, working to promote physical and mental health, prevent disease and injury, and ensure access to essential health services. Some of our key functions and services include: preventing and controlling diseases, supporting maternal and child health, addressing mental health and substance use, ensuring environmental health, and promoting health equity.
The Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (PHP) program engages with communities to advance policy, foster supportive environments, and promote healthy behaviors, aiming for all Multnomah County communities to live in safe, thriving environments that support health and wellbeing.
The PHP Tobacco Control and Prevention Intern will gain hands-on public health experience by collaborating on tobacco prevention and cessation activities, such as community outreach and education, retailer compliance support, communication and training development, policy research, and data analysis.
As the PHP Tobacco Control and Prevention Intern, your work may include:
Community Engagement

• Engage the community and support regulatory compliance by coordinating educational activities, participating in outreach events, and assisting tobacco retailers with policy adherence.

Training Development

• Contribute to training development by reviewing and assisting in retailer sessions, translating data into impactful reports, and supporting the implementation team with communications and logistics.

Tobacco Prevention Communications

• Collaborate with the TCPP Communications Specialist and Health Department Social Media Strategist to design campaign effectiveness surveys and develop short-term mini-campaigns.

Tobacco Prevention Policy Research

• Collaborate with internal and external work groups on the vape disposal project to identify effective, safe solutions for addressing this emerging toxic waste issue.

Tobacco Control Data Analysis

• Collaborate with the TCPP Policy Analyst to finalize comprehensive retailer data, including inspection results, language preferences, and sales metrics.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Completion of undergraduate degree in Public Health, Social Work, Community Health, Communications, or related fields.
Education/Training: Enrollment in an accredited institution leading to a post-graduate degree or equivalent program
Experience: One (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position

However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. • Master-level student in Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health, Epidemiology or other Health Professions.

Salary/Pay: Please be advised that the pay range listed for this position is intended to provide general guidance on the earning potential for the role. However, actual compensation will be determined in accordance with the Oregon Equal Pay Law and will take into account factors such as the candidate's relevant experience and education. Candidates should expect that initial offers will be made within the listed pay range and may not be at or near the top of the range.
