What is a Miss Dig?

A Miss Dig job typically involves working for an underground utility locating service, where employees identify and mark buried utility lines before excavation projects. This helps prevent damage to essential services like gas, water, electricity, and communication lines. Workers use specialized equipment to detect utilities and provide accurate markings to ensure safe digging. It's a crucial role in construction, infrastructure maintenance, and public safety.

What does a Miss Dig do?

A typical day for a Miss Dig Utility Locator involves traveling to various job sites to identify and mark the locations of underground utilities using specialized equipment. You'll spend much of your time outdoors, interacting with contractors, homeowners, and sometimes municipal crews to ensure excavation projects don't damage critical infrastructure. Coordinating with dispatchers and updating digital records of your findings is also common. The role offers variety and autonomy, but also requires excellent time management and consistent attention to detail. Over time, experienced locators may have opportunities to move into supervisory roles or safety training positions.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a Miss Dig?

To thrive as a Miss Dig Utility Locator, you need a solid understanding of underground utility systems, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with electromagnetic locating equipment, GIS mapping software, and adherence to safety regulations are crucial. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently set top candidates apart. These skills are important to safely and accurately identify utility lines, minimizing risk of damage and ensuring compliance with state regulations.
