Safety Specialist/Engineer
Location: Copper One, Moab, UTAH
The Role
We are seeking a Safety Specialist/Engineer to be responsible and accountable for the site's safety, health, and security, along with assisting in developing, implementing, and sustaining good safety and health practices for our team.
This role is responsible to ensure that safety standards and procedures are followed by all mine personnel in compliance with company, state, and federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations. Copper One is a 24/7/365 open pit mining operation with an excellent safety performance and compliance record.
The ideal candidate combines OSHA and MSHA expertise and experience having acted as a Safety Specialist or Safety Engineer in mining operations.
What You'll Do
  • Lead by example, in all safety processes, ensuring complete safe engineering and operating practices.
  • Manage and ensure strict compliance and ethical behavior with state and federal regulations in all aspects of the business.
  • Ensure on-time and accurate reporting of any incidents that are a result of Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance.
  • Interact and accompany MSHA / Regulatory personnel when at the site for inspections, accidents, investigations, record reviews, and any other official business matters.
  • Provide / Conduct MSHA Annual Refresher Training and New Miner Training to employees and approved contractors.
  • Attend safety meetings, providing guidance and input.
  • Manage and ensure strict compliance and ethical behavior with state and federal regulations in all areas of operation.
  • Provide direction and guidance to MSHA during site inspections.
  • Work with Company legal counsel and other groups when necessary to resolve legal issues.
  • Oversee and provide direction in incident and accident investigations.
  • Provide accurate documentation and reporting with every investigation.
  • Work with all Managers and Supervisors in ensuring Health and Safety goals are being achieved.
  • Work with Human Resources in handling Workers Comp. issues and other health-related issues.
  • Provide assistance and/or direction in the enforcement of the Company's Drug & Alcohol Policy.
  • Establish and maintain on-going internal and external customer relationships to anticipate and resolve potential problems. This includes a high level of communication with all departments and commitment to continuously improve current procedures.
  • Attend weekly meetings and other regular meetings to ensure open communication and to gain understanding of other departmental and company needs.

What You Bring
  • 1+ years of progressive safety experience in chemical, industrial, refining, mining, or heavy construction environments. Surface mining experience will be a plus.
  • Proven track record of building proactive safety cultures and achieving measurable safety improvements.
  • Training or education with MSHA regulations and processes preferrable.
  • Deep knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulations, applied in real-world operations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills across all levels.
