Job description
Teaching-Focused Appointment
Department of Mining Engineering
University of Utah
The Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Utah invites applications for a career-line faculty position focused on undergraduate teaching and student success. This is a 12-month, teaching-focused appointment with an anticipated salary range of $80,000-$90,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and subject to University approval. The anticipated start date is 12/1/2026.
About the Department
The University of Utah Department of Mining Engineering is a forward-looking program committed to preparing students for productive careers in responsible mineral development in Utah, the western United States, and around the world. The department's mission is to provide world-class training in mining engineering by leveraging the latest technology and teaching excellence. The department values safe and progressive mineral development, strong support for the University and regional stakeholders, and a collegial and professional environment where faculty, staff, and students thrive.
The department has an active and experienced mining engineering faculty with strengths across a broad range of areas, including tailings and waste management, remote sensing, health and safety, rock mechanics, mine ventilation, AI and systems engineering, systems integration, and heat management. The program is strongly connected to industry and regional stakeholders, and its strategic direction emphasizes undergraduate curriculum strength, ABET accreditation, teaching facilities, student experience, industry case studies, and preparation of technically strong, digitally fluent, systems-oriented graduates who are ready to contribute from day one.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting the undergraduate Mining Engineering program and the department's ABET-accredited degree. The position is intended for an experienced teacher and mining professional who is comfortable teaching a wide range of undergraduate mining engineering courses and who can connect classroom learning with practical mining applications.
The appointment will carry a heavy teaching responsibility. The successful candidate will teach core and elective undergraduate courses, contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement, support ABET assessment and documentation, advise and mentor undergraduate students, and help strengthen the student experience through applied projects, field-oriented learning, industry case studies, and professional preparation.
This position is especially well suited for a candidate who has meaningful teaching experience, substantial industry experience, or both. A Ph.D. is preferred, but it is not required if the candidate's teaching record, professional mining experience, and technical background demonstrate the ability to deliver high-quality undergraduate mining engineering instruction.
Primary Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Teach undergraduate mining engineering courses across the curriculum, with possible areas including but not limited to introduction to mining, mine design, mine planning, surface and underground mining methods, mine ventilation, mine safety, mine systems, geospatial and surveying applications, mine operations, equipment, engineering economics, capstone design, and technical electives.
Support the ABET-accredited undergraduate program through assessment, continuous improvement, course documentation, and engagement with student outcomes.
Develop and deliver high-quality course materials that integrate engineering fundamentals, practical mining applications, modern digital tools, industry case studies, and systems thinking.
Mentor and advise undergraduate students, including support for capstone projects, internships, professional development, student design competitions, and career preparation.
Work collaboratively with tenure-line and career-line faculty to maintain a coherent undergraduate curriculum and strengthen the student value proposition.
Engage with industry partners, alumni, and stakeholders to bring practical mining experience into the classroom.
Contribute to department service appropriate to a teaching-focused career-line appointment such as recruitment events, faculty meetings, etc.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
An earned bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering (or a closely aligned engineering field).
Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach undergraduate mining engineering courses effectively.
Significant experience in mining engineering education, mining industry practice, or a combination of both.
Ability to teach across a broad range of mining engineering topics.
Commitment to undergraduate student learning, professional preparation, and continuous curriculum improvement.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry partners.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have most of the following:
Ph.D. in Mining Engineering or a closely related field.
Master's degree in Mining Engineering with substantial teaching and/or industry experience.
Significant professional experience in mine operations, mine planning, mine design, mine safety, ventilation, geomechanics, tailings, systems engineering, automation, digital mine technologies, or related areas.
Prior university-level teaching experience, especially in an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Experience with undergraduate curriculum development, course assessment, ABET documentation, or continuous improvement processes.
Experience using or teaching modern mining software, digital tools, data analytics, mine planning tools, geospatial tools, or systems-integration approaches.
Ability to develop industry-connected projects, case studies, field experiences, laboratories, or capstone design experiences.
Professional licensure or eligibility for professional licensure.
Experience mentoring student design competition team
The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education.
