Description:
POSITION OVERVIEW
To direct and coordinate the safe, environmentally compliant, productive, and cost-effective drilling and blasting operations of the Mission Mine.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Work safely at all times and supervise all crew members in a way that supports ASARCO's Total Safety Culture program, aligns with all health and safety rules and procedures, emphasizes risk management, and ensures that everyone returns home safely at the end of the day.
Supervise and direct the activities of the mine operations drillers and the blasting/powder crew in their daily activities.
Line out the drillers based on priorities supplied by Technical Services according to available resources and mining needs, ensuring high use of availability of priority drills.
Track and manage explosives inventory daily and check records against physical inventory. Maintain explosives supply in accordance with blasting needs while maintaining cost controls. Monitor supply of stem rock.
Track consumables on drills, including bits and steel, in order to analyze performance and make recommendations of changes to improve production or lower costs. Maintain sufficient inventory of drill consumables while maintaining cost controls.
Design loading and timing schemes for each shot to be uploaded for contractor explosives loading and blasting crew tie-in and initiation. Work closely with Technical Services on proper shot timing and loading to maintain highwall integrity, promote digability, and align blasting to observed geology.
Coordinate daily blasting activities, including arranging guards and setting up safe guarding locations, working with mine operations and dispatch to align blasting activities with ore flow requirements and operator lunches to minimize disruptions to production.
Safely initiate blasts following the appropriate SOPs and industry best practices.
Monitor and work with blasting crew to ensure proper loading of holes according to blasting design. Perform QAQC checks using both BlastIQ software and in-field checks.
Work closely with blasting contractors on blast scheduling, QAQC of loading, blasting product usage, inventory tracking, and opportunities for improvement.
Lead or coordinate on bi-weekly blasting meetings, reviewing KPIs, identifying areas for improvement, evaluating performance, and planning ahead for coming weeks.
Manage and maintain BlastIQ system for blast data tracking, ensuring information is uploaded on a timely manner and that information is complete.
Monitor driller performance, manage driller schedules, and coach and mentor drillers to improve productivity and reduce costs.
Analyze blasting and drilling KPIs for opportunities for improvement, with particular focus on production rates, fragmentation, highwall compliance, and cost reduction.
Work closely with mine operations to ensure that all drill patterns are adequately prepped in advance of drilling activities in alignment with blasting sequence from Technical Services. Work with mine operations to ensure delivery of required stem rock to patterns as needed.
Work with crusher operations to optimize fragmentation to ensure desired throughput through both crushers while controlling costs.
Attend daily Mine Ops/Technical Services alignment meetings and weekly mine plan meetings.
Ensure all support equipment required for drilling and blasting is maintained in safe and productive condition, working with shops to prioritize needs.
Inspect and ensure that all equipment, magazines, storage yards, and other associated areas are safe and organized in a clean and efficient manner in compliance with ASARCO, MSHA, and ATF standards.
Maintain a competent and effective work force through effective personnel management and labor relations techniques and policies.
Promote improved performance of subordinates through ongoing training and communication of ideas, techniques, and policies.
Assist in preparation of departmental budgets and forecasts ensuring proper cost and business planning.
Communicate with the General Mine Supervisor and Mine Manager concerning operating practices that have the potential to increase production and decrease costs.
Fill in for Senior Supervisor as needed.
Coordinate and communicate closely with the Maintenance General Supervisors, planners and Electrical Supervisor on those maintenance requirements affecting mine production to obtain high, long-term equipment availability through effective maintenance, equipment replacement, and improvement programs.
Ensure that work practices within the mine area comply with company, local, state, and federal safety, and environmental standards.
Interact with workforce and Human Resources, Purchasing, Accounting, etc., to ensure compliance with established company policies.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be proficient with MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, and MS Outlook.
Strong interpersonal skills in developing consensus building.
Applicant must have good communications.
SKILLS (oral and written).
Must be able to manage time effectively and set priorities.
Requires the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Knowledge of BlastIQ software is a plus
Knowledge of SHOTPlus software is a plus.
Knowledge of SAP/UKG software is a plus.
Knowledge of ISO 14001 and 45001 is a plus
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must have prior drilling and blasting experience of 5 years in open pit mining. Drilling and Blasting supervisory experience preferred.
Ability to be ATF certified as Employee Possessor
