Plant Manager - Millwork & Residential Jamb Manufacturing

Location: San Bernardino, California
Department: Operations
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
Exempt Position | Full-Time | On-Site

Position Summary

The Plant Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and profitability of the manufacturing facility, overseeing all aspects of custom millwork production, interior residential jamb manufacturing, shipping, receiving, quality, safety, and workforce management.

This position directs the production of custom doors, windows, architectural millwork, interior residential door jambs, and related wood products while ensuring operational excellence across the facility. The Plant Manager will lead production and warehouse teams, manage shipping and receiving personnel, optimize workflow, maintain quality standards, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. While this role oversees shipping department operations, it does not directly supervise truck drivers.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive millwork manufacturing experience and a proven ability to lead high-performing teams in a fast-paced custom manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Operations Leadership

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for plant operations.
  • Develop and execute operational strategies that support company growth, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of labor, machinery, materials, and facility resources.
  • Establish and monitor plant performance metrics, production goals, and operational objectives.
  • Lead department supervisors, managers, and production teams to achieve safety, quality, and productivity targets.
     

Millwork Manufacturing Oversight

  • Direct all aspects of custom millwork manufacturing, including:
    • Custom doors
    • Custom windows
    • Architectural millwork
    • Moldings and trim packages
    • Specialty wood products
  • Ensure production schedules are met while maintaining the highest levels of craftsmanship and quality.
  • Review production processes and identify opportunities to improve throughput and reduce waste.
  • Collaborate with sales, estimating, engineering, and project management teams to support customer requirements.
     

Residential Jamb Production Oversight

  • Oversee all interior residential jamb manufacturing operations.
  • Manage production planning and scheduling to meet customer demand and delivery commitments.
  • Ensure product quality, consistency, and adherence to specifications.
  • Implement process improvements to maximize production efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Maintain inventory levels for raw materials and production components.
     

Shipping & Receiving Management

  • Lead all shipping and receiving personnel and warehouse activities.
  • Ensure timely movement of materials into production and finished goods to customers.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through proper controls and cycle counting procedures.
  • Coordinate packaging, staging, loading, and shipment preparation activities.
  • Develop efficient warehouse organization and material flow systems.
  • Work closely with purchasing and production teams to ensure material availability.
     

Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor, train, and develop supervisors and employees.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance reviews and establish development plans.
  • Drive employee engagement and retention initiatives.
  • Partner with Human Resources regarding staffing, training, and employee relations matters.
     

Quality Management

  • Maintain strict quality standards throughout all manufacturing operations.
  • Establish and monitor quality control procedures.
  • Investigate product defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure products meet customer specifications and company standards.
  • Promote a culture of craftsmanship and manufacturing excellence.
     

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture throughout the facility.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Conduct routine plant safety inspections and audits.
  • Investigate accidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable environmental and regulatory requirements.
     

Financial & Operational Performance

  • Manage labor costs, operational expenses, and productivity metrics.
  • Participate in annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Monitor key performance indicators including:
    • Plant output
    • Labor efficiency
    • On-time delivery
    • Quality performance
    • Inventory accuracy
    • Scrap and waste reduction
    • Safety performance
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or service.
     

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in the millwork, door, window, architectural woodwork, cabinetry, or related manufacturing industry.
  • Minimum 5 years of plant management, operations management, or senior manufacturing leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing both custom manufacturing and high-volume production environments.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Millwork manufacturing processes
    • Custom door and window production
    • Residential jamb manufacturing
    • Lean manufacturing principles
    • Quality management systems
    • Inventory and warehouse operations
  • Experience managing shipping and receiving operations within a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, shop drawings, and production schedules.
  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office applications.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Operations Management, Business, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in architectural millwork manufacturing.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification.
  • Experience managing facilities with 50+ employees.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work throughout manufacturing, warehouse, and office environments.
  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the facility.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely around industrial machinery, forklifts, and manufacturing equipment.
