What is millwork design?

Millwork design refers to the planning and creation of custom woodwork products such as cabinetry, moldings, doors, windows, and trim that are typically fabricated in a mill. Job description

Our Millwork Engineers play a critical role in transforming design intent into buildable, efficient, and high-quality custom millwork at Detroit Woodworking. This position bridges design, engineering, and production—ensuring that every project is thoughtfully detailed, technically sound, and optimized for fabrication and installation.

From concept through production, the Millwork Engineer is responsible for developing precise shop drawings, coordinating technical requirements, and supporting the shop floor to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and exceptional craftsmanship. This role is essential to maintaining Detroit Woodworking’s standards for quality, constructability, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

· Develop detailed shop drawings, sections, and details for custom millwork, cabinetry, and architectural woodwork.

· Translate architectural and interior design drawings into accurate, buildable fabrication documents.

· Coordinate dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, hardware, and installation requirements.

· Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and shop leadership to resolve design and constructability challenges.

· Support the shop floor with clarifications, revisions, and technical guidance throughout fabrication.

· Ensure drawings align with production capabilities, tooling, and Lean Manufacturing processes.

· Prepare and maintain bill of materials, cut lists, and fabrication documentation as required.

· Review field conditions, site dimensions, and installation constraints when applicable.

· Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to detailing standards, drawing efficiency, and production workflows.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for a detail-driven, solutions-oriented professional who understands that great millwork starts with great planning. The ideal candidate is someone who takes ownership of their work, communicates clearly, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

This individual:

  • Has a strong understanding of how millwork is fabricated—not just how it is drawn.
  • Thinks critically about constructability, efficiency, and long-term performance.
  • Communicates effectively with project managers, shop leadership, and craftsmen.
  • Is proactive in identifying potential issues before they impact production or installation.
  • Takes pride in accuracy, organization, and continuous improvement.
  • Respects craftsmanship and understands the role engineering plays in achieving exceptional results.

At Detroit Woodworking, we value team members who are curious, accountable, and committed to doing things the right way—every time.

You are:

  • Motivated, energetic, and eager to advance their woodworking career.
  • 3–7 years of experience in millwork engineering, detailing, or architectural woodworking.
  • Strong understanding of custom millwork construction methods, materials, and hardware.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD required; Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, or similar preferred).
  • CNC programming for millwork (Mozaik or similar0
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and interior design drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Knowledge of shop processes, CNC fabrication, and installation sequencing preferred.
  • Demonstrates reliability, dependability, and accountability.
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Maintains a positive, professional attitude with adaptability to daily challenges.
  • Values teamwork, communication, and respect for others.
  • Embraces Detroit Woodworking’s core values and culture of continuous improvement.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Office-based role with regular interaction in the production shop.
  • Occasional site visits or field measurements may be required.
  • Standard work hours with flexibility based on project demands.
