Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and fabricators are essential soft skills. These capabilities ensure precise, functional, and visually appealing custom millwork that meets client needs and industry standards.

What is millwork design?

Millwork design refers to the planning and creation of custom woodwork products such as cabinetry, moldings, doors, windows, and trim that are typically fabricated in a mill. Millwork designers work with architects, builders, and clients to produce detailed drawings and specifications for these wood components, ensuring they meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. The process combines creativity, technical knowledge, and understanding of materials to achieve high-quality, customized architectural features for residential and commercial spaces.

This position bridges engineering, production, and craftsmanship—ensuring projects are manufactured accurately, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

This role requires strong experience with Mozaik software, CNC programming, and hands-on machine operation within a custom woodworking or millwork environment.

From concept through production, the Millwork Engineer is responsible for developing precise shop drawings, coordinating technical requirements, and supporting the shop floor to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and exceptional craftsmanship. This role is essential to maintaining Detroit Woodworking’s standards for quality, constructability, and continuous improvement.

 Key Responsibilities

    CNC Machine Operation

    • Build and maintain Mozaik libraries, part templates, materials, tooling, and machining macros.
    • Optimize nesting, toolpaths, and cut strategies to improve efficiency, material yield, and cycle times.
    • Collaborate with project managers, designers, and shop leadership to resolve constructability or production challenges.
    • Prepare CNC-ready files that align with shop standards and Lean manufacturing processes.

    Quality, Process & Continuous Improvement

    • Ensure all CNC-produced components meet design intent, tolerances, and finish requirements.
    • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, reduce waste, and standardize best practices.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to CNC production and engineering efficiency.
