What is a military product design engineer?

A Military Product Design Engineer is a professional who develops and designs equipment, systems, or products used by the armed forces. Their responsibilities include creating prototypes, ensuring compliance with military standards, and working with multidisciplinary teams to meet rigorous safety and performance requirements. These engineers may work on technologies such as vehicles, weapons, communications equipment, or protective gear, and are often involved in both the conceptual and testing phases of product development. Their expertise helps ensure military products are reliable, effective, and tailored to operational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a military product design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Military Product Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience with defense industry standards, and often a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of military compliance regulations such as MIL-STD is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring design integrity. These skills and qualifications are important to deliver reliable, safe, and innovative products that meet rigorous military requirements.

What are some common challenges military product design engineers face when working on defense projects?

Military Product Design Engineers often navigate strict regulatory requirements and security protocols, which can add complexity to the design process and limit access to certain materials or technologies. Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams—including systems engineers, manufacturing specialists, and end-users in the armed forces—is essential to ensure that products meet both technical and operational needs. Additionally, timelines can be tight due to shifting defense priorities, making effective project management and adaptability crucial skills in this environment.

What is the difference between Military Product Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMilitary Product Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, security clearances often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, professional licensure optional
Work EnvironmentDefense contractors, military facilities, R&D labsManufacturing plants, design firms, industrial settings
Industry UsagePrimarily defense, aerospace, military technologyAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy

The Military Product Design Engineer focuses on developing and designing equipment and systems for military applications, often requiring security clearances and specialized knowledge. In contrast, Mechanical Engineers work across various industries designing mechanical systems without necessarily focusing on defense. Both roles require engineering credentials but differ in work environment and industry focus.

Do military product design engineers get paid well?

Military product design engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to the specialized skills and security clearances required. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and level of expertise, but they generally align with engineering industry standards and can include benefits such as government pensions and job stability.

Do military product design engineers make good money?

Military product design engineers typically earn competitive salaries that reflect their specialized skills in engineering, materials, and defense systems. Salaries can vary based on experience, education, and location, with many positions offering additional benefits such as security clearances and overtime pay. Overall, the role is considered well-paying within the engineering field due to its technical demands and security requirements.

Job description

About The Role

As a Product Design Engineer at HP IQ, you'll work at the intersection of creativity, engineering, and design to develop groundbreaking devices that redefine how people interact with technology. You'll collaborate closely with industrial designers, hardware engineers, and interaction designers to transform ideas into functional prototypes and production-ready designs.

From 3D CAD modeling and hands-on prototyping to engineering analysis and design validation, you'll help solve complex mechanical challenges and drive designs from early concepts toward production. You'll have the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful engineering work while learning from an experienced, multidisciplinary team and contributing to products that push the boundaries of what's possible.

What You Might Do
  • Design mechanical parts, components, and assemblies for new consumer devices using 3D CAD (NX)
  • Create detailed 2D engineering drawings, define specifications and tolerances, and work closely with overseas vendor partners to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Design and run experiments, applying engineering analysis and test results to guide design decisions
  • Evaluate materials, manufacturing processes, and design tradeoffs to develop robust and scalable solutions
  • Work cross-functionally with hardware, software, industrial design, and other engineering teams to bring concepts from ideation through development
  • Conceptualize, design, and build prototypes that quickly validate ideas
  • Participate in design reviews, clearly communicating design decisions, technical analysis, and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Build, test, troubleshoot, and iterate prototypes to identify issues and improve product performance, reliability, and user experience
  • Work with manufacturing and vendor partners to iterate designs and support the transition from prototype to production
Essential Qualifications
  • Recently completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Product Design Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience using 3D CAD software (Siemens NX preferred) to design mechanical components and assemblies
  • Hands-on experience building, prototyping, and testing mechanical designs
  • Strong understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to open-ended design challenges
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and present work effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary product development environment
Preferred Skills
  • Experience developing consumer products through internships, academic projects, research, personal projects, or professional experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of materials and scalable manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, machining, sheet metal, casting, or additive manufacturing
  • Experience with machine tools and prototyping equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, mills, and lathes
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Experience designing and executing mechanical tests or experiments and analyzing the resulting data
  • Exposure to working with suppliers, manufacturers, or fabrication partners
  • Experience or interest in industrial design, human interaction design, or graphic design

Salary Range: $107,400-$155,700
