The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

LLE is seeking an Optical Engineer to work in the Multi Terawatt - Optical Parametric Amplification Line (MTW-OPAL). The successful candidate must be a detail-oriented, analytical engineer capable of supporting laser operations through data-driven analysis, technical evaluation, and hands-on operation and testing. This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong optical background who enjoys problem-solving, working with technical equipment, and collaborating across engineering teams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Qualify for and stand watch on the MTW-OPAL facility
  • Perform engineering analysis to supportlaserdevelopment, system performance evaluation, operational activitiesand ensure system safety
  • Collect, process, and interpret technical data to identifytrends, anomalies, and performance improvements
  • Conduct laboratory and field-testing using equipment such as oscilloscopes and other diagnostic tools
  • Support validation and verification activities through structured test planning and documentation
  • Develop and maintainstandard operating procedures and test plans to provide clear direction for technicians and operators
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including scientists, engineers, andtechnicians
  • Supportlaser upgrade projectsand software development. Will haveresponsibilityover minor aspects under the direction ofproject manager.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics and 3 years of relevant optics or laser experience required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with lasers, preferably laser diodes required
  • Experience with automated alignment processes, like pick-and-place robotic equipment, preferably for optical or semiconductor components required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • A strong foundation in mathematics and physics as well as an inquisitive and analytical mind.
  • Ability to develop data collection and database interface and integration into manufacturing execution system.
  • High level of competency with modelling of optical systems. (Zemax highly preferred)
  • Ability to develop optical alignment tooling and procedures.
  • Track recordof project workon optical systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics
  • Willingness and ability to work evening shiftsup to2 times per week
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment
  • Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Excel, or similar platforms)
  • Prior experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
