Overview

Under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer, the Executive Director, Downtown YMCAs provide strategic and operational leadership for the Sacramento Central YMCA and Capital YMCA, overseeing the performance, growth, and impact of both branches.

Serving as the executive leader for both locations, this position is responsible for creating an exceptional member experience, leading high-performing teams, driving membership growth and retention, ensuring operational excellence, and strengthening the YMCA's presence within the downtown and midtown Sacramento community.

The Executive Director directly supervises the Capital Y Branch Manager and the Sacramento Central YMCA Member Services Lead while partnering closely with Association Program Directors and leadership to deliver outstanding programs and services.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Executive Director contributes to association-wide strategic planning while maintaining primary responsibility for the successful operation of Sacramento Central and Capital YMCA.

Responsibilities

Branch Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide executive leadership for Sacramento Central YMCA and Capital YMCA.
  • Establish a culture of exceptional member service, operational excellence, and accountability.
  • Maintain a visible presence throughout both branches.
  • Lead branch strategic planning while ensuring alignment with the YMCA mission and strategic plan.
  • Build strong relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support annual campaign efforts, sponsorship development, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Develop, engage, and support an active Branch Advisory Council by recruiting and cultivating volunteer leaders, providing strategic staff leadership, facilitating meaningful engagement, and leveraging council expertise to advance the YMCA's mission, strengthen community partnerships,

Operational Management

  • Ensure efficient daily operations across both branches.
  • Maintain high standards for customer service, cleanliness, safety, and facility presentation.
  • Oversee branch scheduling, facility utilization, and operational planning.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, licensing requirements, and risk management standards.
  • Monitor branch performance through key operational metrics including membership, retention, service quality, and financial performance.
  • Develop and implement operational improvements that enhance the member experience.
Financial Leadership
  • Develop and manage branch operating budgets.
  • Monitor revenue and expense performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency while maintaining exceptional service.
  • Collaborate with Finance to ensure sound fiscal management.
Staff Leadership
  • Supervise the Capital YMCA Branch Manager.
  • Supervise the Sacramento Central Member Services Lead.
  • Recruit, coach, develop, and evaluate branch leadership staff.
  • Foster a positive workplace culture built upon accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote professional development and succession planning throughout branch operations.

Team Development & Collaboration

  • Recruit, supervise, and develop branch leaders and key operational staff to achieve excellence in service and performance.
  • Partner and collaborate with HR to ensure best practices in hiring, onboarding, and staff engagement.
  • Model and reinforce a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and member-focused service across all teams.
  • Promote communication and shared learning between branches to build a unified service delivery approach.

Leadership & Representation

Serve as a key member of the YMCA Senior Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy and execution.

Represent the YMCA of Superior California in community, civic, and professional forums.

Foster partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and leaders that align with YMCA priorities and mission.

Embody and promote the Y’s core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions and decisions.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a General Manager, Executive Director, Branch Manager, Operations Manager, or Program Director role (or equivalent).
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to supervise multiple teams and locations.
  • Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and monitor standard operating procedures.
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of:

Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens; New Employee Orientation; Preventing Workplace Violence; Workplace Harassment.

  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Physical Demands:

Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform the essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
